Os Jogos Lésbios ou Os Amores de Joaninha (1877) será, possivelmente, o primeiro romance da literatura portuguesa que aborda a temática da identidade de género. Joaninha, a personagem principal, é uma freira do convento de Barrô, por todas considerada muito bela, mas de uma beleza máscula, que a torna irresistível para as suas companheiras de clausura. Tomando consciência de que não é uma mulher, Joaninha consegue escapar-se do convento, veste roupas de homem e alista-se no exército. Agora já sob o nome de João Sem Terra, luta na guerra civil ao lado das forças liberais. A sua coragem e heroísmo ímpares, serão recompensados no dia em que finalmente celebra matrimónio com a sua apaixonada. Fernando Curopos considera que Arsénio de Chatenay está a par de tudo o que se faz a nível da "scientia sexualis" da época, mas discorda dela. Enquanto os médicos escrevem para condenar os atos contranatura das lésbicas (e dos homossexuais), ele demonstra a naturalidade da sexualidade humana, liberta de qualquer constrangimento. Logo, na "periférica praia lusitana", aparece um homem a escrever sobre sexo, servindo-se do discurso vindo lá de fora (Paris-Berlim), mas para escrever contra ele. E essa desconstrução só será feita um século mais tarde, a partir de Foucault... Na literatura finissecular (no naturalismo, como em Botelho, no decadentismo, como em Vila-Moura), o que sobressai é o patológico e a condenação dos atos contranatura, nunca o narrador aparece a defender os "perversos". Têm que morrer, como o Barão de Lavos, personagem do romance epónimo de Botelho, ou a Maria Peregrina, heroína do romance Nova Safo, de Vila-Moura, por serem seres abjetos. Joaninha, Raquel, Maria das Dores, e as outras "ribaldas" de Os Jogos Lésbios ou Os Amores de Joaninha, acabam bem, e isso é que faz com que o romance, além de anticlerical, seja um texto eminentemente queer, o primeiro no que diz respeito à literatura em língua portuguesa.
