Lima Barreto morreu em novembro de 1922, em sua casa suburbana de Todos os Santos, no Rio de Janeiro, lendo a Revue des Deux Mondes. Tinha 41 anos e deixava a obra de ficção mais importante da literatura brasileira, depois de Machado de Assis. A sua morte, alguns meses depois da Semana de Arte Moderna, tem alguma coisa de simbólica. É como uma espécie de retirada de cena de um Brasil arcaico, preso a valores em acelerado processo de erosão, diante do fulgor de um novo mundo que ansiava por se manifestar, por bem ou à força. Alguma coisa desse mundo em gestação já estava presente na obra de Lima Barreto: a simpatia pelos marginalizados, a revolta contra os preconceitos, a ânsia de demolição social que fez dele um precursor da própria Semana. No prefácio Melhores Contos Lima Barreto, Francisco de Assis Barbosa lembra a analogia estabelecida por Otto Maria Carpeaux entre Lima e os escritores norte-americanos da década de 1910, iniciadores de uma literatura de protesto chamada à época de "remoção do lixo". Afinidades à parte, o ensaísta observa que nenhum dos escritores norte-americanos citados - Upton Sinclair e Jack London - tinha o humor corrosivo do brasileiro nem criou uma obra tão humana como o Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma. Sensibilidade humana, humor corrosivo, e uma mal disfarçada ternura pelos humildes, os vencidos da vida, atirados nos subúrbios ("o subúrbio é o refúgio dos infelizes", escreveu) assinalam também os contos de Lima. É neles que se realça ainda mais o espírito de revolta do escritor, assim como a sua permanente inveja dos ricos, sentimentos que se acham presentes em muitas de suas melhores histórias curtas ("O Homem que Sabia Javanês", "A Biblioteca", "Cló", "A Nova Califórnia", "Clara dos Anjos"), obras-primas da literatura brasileira e universal.

This book breaks new ground in considering the nature and function of anthologies of poetry and short stories in twentieth-century Portugal. It tackles the main theoretical issues, identifies a significant body of critical writing on the relationship between anthologies, literary history and the canon, and proposes an approach that might be designated Descriptive Anthology Studies. The author aims to achieve a full understanding of the role of anthologies in the literary polysystem. Moreover, this study considers anthologies published in Portugal in the early years of the twentieth-century, the influential figures who made them, the works they selected, and who read them. It also focuses on the principal publishing houses of the 1940s and 50s, and how their literary directors shaped public taste and promoted intercultural transfer. The author reveals tensions between conservative, nostalgic anthologies that promote an idyllic vision of rural Portugal, and collections of poems that question and challenge the status quo, whether in respect of the colonial wars or repressed female sexuality. The last part of the book explores anthology production in the period following the Revolution of 1974, observing the co-existence of traditional anthologising activity with new trends and innovations, and noting the role of women, both as anthologists and anthology items.

Among the numerous discursive carriers through which translations come into being, are channeled and gain readership, translation anthologies and collections have so far received little attention among translation scholars: either they are let aside as almost ungraspable categories, astride editing and translating, mixing in most variable ways authors, genres, languages or cultures, or are taken as convenient but rather meaningless groupings of single translations. This volume takes a new stand, makes a plea to consider translation anthologies and collections at face value and offers an extensive discussion about the more salient aspects of translation anthologies and collections: their complex discursive properties, their manifold roles in canonization processes and in strategies of cultural censorship.
