La obra literaria de Nélida Piñon se asienta sobre tres pilares fundamentales: su país, sus orígenes españoles y la escritura en sí. Brasil y España conforman los dos polos geográficos entre los que se desarrolla la visión nelidiana del mundo en general («Desde la más tierna infancia he sentido los efectos de la doble cultura. Destinada a reivindicar el mundo desde un punto de vista doble», dirá) y de la literatura en particular, mientras escribir es para la autora el modo de relacionarse con el mundo y un instrumento que le permite explicarse a sí misma. Como reflejo de esta necesidad de ser interpretada en esa multiplicidad de facetas, en este libro se recogen todas las dimensiones de la cosmovisión nelidiana. Para ello se reúnen algunas de las ponencias y comunicaciones que se presentaron en el I Congreso Internacional de Literatura Brasileña «Nélida Piñon en la República de los sueños», que se celebró en la Universidad de Salamanca en noviembre de 2018. Conforman estas páginas los trabajos de algunos de los brasileñistas más importantes a ambos lados del Atlántico: Domício Proença, Antonio Maura, María Isabel López Martínez, Carmen Villarino o Ascensión Rivas Hernández. En el libro se recogen, además, las investigaciones de estudiosos pertenecientes a diferentes universidades brasileñas, muchos de ellos desde una perspectiva comparatista. Algunos de estos trabajos hacen un examen general de la obra de la autora; otros abordan aspectos sobre el feminismo en su narrativa o analizan sus personajes femeninos; en otros se estudian las relaciones entre los dos espacios geográficos vitales de Nélida Piñon, Galicia y Brasil. Mención especial requiere el capítulo reservado a la propia autora en el que se recoge su intervención en la clausura del Congreso. En su discurso, Piñon analiza La república de los sueños y lanza una mirada cómplice hacia sus personajes deteniéndose particularmente en la figura del emigrante y reflexionando sobre el dolor que implica el abandono del país de origen.
