Nas últimas décadas aumentou em número e qualidade uma diversificada produção historiográfica sobre a Primeira República no Brasil. Uma das características marcantes desses trabalhos é o tom de polêmica assumido, a começar pelo questionamento da designação do período: República Velha. Nesse adjetivo, demarcava-se de forma teleológica um sem-número de características da primeira experiência republicana, especialmente de sua vida político-institucional, toda comprometida pelo fracasso dos procedimentos liberal-democráticos e, em decorrência, dos valores que eles deviam assegurar. Um “nome” que começou a ser sustentado, ainda durante essa experiência, por críticos que ganharam força no pós-30 com a ascensão de projetos autoritários que desprezavam tais práticas, atacando as dinâmicas de representação e participação políticas. Este livro é, portanto, uma sólida contribuição a esse debate historiográfico. Para confrontar “certezas”, vale-se de rigorosa análise de fontes e estimulantes escolhas conceituais. Seu autor faz uma reflexão sobre a construção da cidadania no Brasil, na medida em que assume a perspectiva dos atores que faziam política naquele momento e lugar: a capital federal nos anos inaugurais da República. Somos levados a compreender os sentidos que esses atores – prefeito, Conselho Municipal e habitantes da cidade – davam às suas ações políticas. Elas eram múltiplas e envolviam demandas, negociações e enfrentamentos, por meio dos quais se evidenciam o estabelecimento de relações entre representantes e representados e, em especial, uma luta por participação política feita por homens e mulheres comuns, que entediam o valor desse canal de vocalização de interesses. Rather than focus on Brazilian slavery or the mass immigration of the end of the century, José Juan Pérez Meléndez examines the orchestrated efforts of migrant recruitment, transport to, and settlement in post-independence Brazil. The book explores Brazil's connections to global colonization drives and migratory movements, unveiling how the Brazilian Empire's engagement with privately run colonization models from overseas crucially informed the domestic sphere. It further reveals that the rise of a for-profit colonization model indelibly shaped Brazilian peopling processes and governance by creating a feedback loop between migration management and government formation. Pérez Meléndez sheds new light on how directed migrations and the business of colonization shaped Brazilian demography as well as enduring social, racial, and class inequalities. the informal construction process of the favelas is an architecture derived from our building practices but less inhibited by preconceived notions of design. in times of limited resources, fast urbanization and increasing demand for shelter, such process in which the materials not only come first but arrive at the construction site before any spatial abstraction has been conceived is a challenge to our creative process. the favela studio was a semester-long exploration of informal settlements searching for creative design solutions as well as a deeper understanding of the issues at Acaba-Mundo favela, a settlement of 1200 people in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

In From Sea-Bathing to Beach-Going B. J. Barickman explores how a narrow ocean beachfront neighborhood and the distinctive practice of beach-going invented by its residents in the early twentieth century came to symbolize a city and a nation. Nineteenth-century Cariocas (residents of Rio) ostensibly practiced sea-bathing for its therapeutic benefits, but the bathing platforms near the city center and the rocky bay shore of Flamengo also provided places to see and be seen. Sea-bathing gave way to beach-going and sun-tanning in the new beachfront neighborhood of Copacabana in the 1920s. This study reveals the social and cultural implications of this transformation and highlights the distinctive changes to urban living that took place in the Brazilian capital. Deeply informed by scholarship about race, class, and gender, as well as civilization and modernity, space, the body, and the role of the state in shaping urban development, this work provides a major contribution to the social and cultural history of Rio de Janeiro and to the history of leisure.
