A partir de então, as nações europeias iniciaram o que se pode chamar de uma corrida exploratória para identificar a natureza destas terras desconhecidas que, invariavelmente, foram sendo cartografadas. É neste contexto histórico que o livro se insere, analisando a produção cartográfica referente ao Brasil quinhentista, procurando compreender como o território foi sendo reconhecido nas diferentes escolas cartográficas europeias. Para tanto, o autor busca contextualizar a sociedade europeia do período, o desenvolvimento tecnológico renascentista e os principais centros produtores de mapas. A investigação científica neste espaço-tempo leva a compreender os contextos pelos quais os mapas foram sendo criados, seus objetivos, funções e os métodos empregados, revelando o retrato de um território completamente novo, desconhecido e inexplorado.
