Reconsidering the relationship between autobiography and self-portraiture, The Body as Medium and Metaphor explores the intertextuality of self-representation in twentieth-century French art. Situating the body as the nexus of intersections between the written word and the visual image, this book rethinks the problematic status of the self. Starting at the twentieth-century’s departure from figurative and mimetic representation, this study discusses the work of seminal artists and writers – including Marcel Duchamp, Michel Leiris, Francis Bacon, Bernard Noël, Gisèle Prassinos, Louise Bourgeois and Orlan – to articulate the twentieth century’s radical revisions of subjectivity that originated from and returned to representations of the word, the image, and the body. This volume will be of interest to students of both French Literature and Art History, particularly those who are interested in the interdisciplinary exchanges between visual arts and literature.

This volume principally deals with perceptions on Jews dating from the beginnings of their emancipation to the Dreyfus Affair. The title in French, and the original title of the colloquium in Hebrew, ‘Enlightened Antisemitism’ not only reflects the overall anti-religious (anti-Christian and, hence, by necessity, anti-Jewish) sentiments of an Enlightenment figure such as Voltaire, but also refers to those who justified either their philosemitism or antisemitism with erudition: Johann David Michaelis, Antoine Guénée, Charles Maurras, etc. With France as its focal point, the volume also contains essays that treat various perceptions of Jews during the same period in England, Germany, and Italy. Interdisciplinary in nature, this collection of essays treats the Jewish question from historical, literary, and sociological angles.

Thresholds Of Meaning written by Jean Duffy and has been published by Liverpool University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-16 with Literary Criticism categories.

Thresholds of Meaning examines contemporary French narrative and explores two related issues: the centrality within recent French fiction and autofiction of the themes of passage, ritual and liminality; and the thematic continuity which links this work with its literary ancestors of the 1960s and 1970s. Through the close analysis of novels and récits by Pierre Bergounioux, François Bon, Marie Darrieussecq, Hélène Lenoir, Laurent Mauvignier and Jean Rouaud, Duffy demonstrates the ways in which contemporary narrative, while capitalising on the formal lessons of the nouveau roman and drawing upon a shared repertoire of motifs and themes, engages with the complex processes by which meaning is produced in the referential world and, in particular, with the rituals and codes that social man brings into play in order to negotiate the various stages of the human life-cycle. By the application of concepts and models derived from ritual theory and from visual analysis, Thresholds of Meaning situates itself at the intersection of the developing field of literature and anthropology studies and research into word and image.
