“Avcı” diye anılan Sultan IV. Avcı Mehmed’in Alay-ı Hümayunu, gerek sanatsal, gerekse tarihsel açıdan çok yönlü okumalara açık bir bilmece-sergi ve kataloğu oldu. -- Sultan Mehmed IV, remembered as Mehmed the Hunter because of his passion for hunting, departed for Edirne in 1657 on a hunting expedition with a large entourage in a display of imperial majesty that has been preserved for history as a visual document in the form of a series of oil paintings commissioned by Claes Rålamb, then the Swedish Ambassador to Istanbul. This almost cinematographic record consisting of a total of twenty paintings is preserved at the Nordiska Museet in Sweden. Sixteen of which returned to Istanbul, as the guests of the Pera Museum, nearly three hundred and fifty years after this event.

This book argues that the periodic ceremonial intrusion into the everyday lives of people across the Ottoman Empire, which the annual royal birthday and accession-day celebrations constituted, had multiple, far-reaching and largely unexplored consequences. On the one hand, it brought ordinary subjects into symbolic contact with the monarch and forged lasting vertical ties of loyalty to him, irrespective of language, location, creed or class. On the other hand, the rounds of royal celebration played a key role in the creation of new types of horizontal ties and ethnic group consciousness that crystallized into national movements and, after the empire's demise, national monarchies.

Tarih yaşanmış geçmiş üzerine, ilk siyasi kuruluşların ortaya çıkmasından beri yazılmasına rağmen, bir ders olarak XIX. yüzyılda uluslaşma süreci ile müfredatlardaki yerini almış bir disiplindir. Fransız burjuva devrimi ve onu izleyen sanayi devrimi ile bilimsel ve teknik gelişmeler iktisadi ve sosyal gelişimin hızlanmasına yol açtı. Bu gelişmeler tarihin bilim olarak gelişimini tamamlaması sonucunu doğurdu. Bu gelişmelere paralel olarak tarih ilmi aynı zamanda bir eğitim aracı olarak kimlik oluşturma ve devlet ideolojisinin geniş kitlelere benimsetilmesinde daha fazla önem kazandı. Osmanlı Devletinde de Avrupa’ya paralel olarak tarih, Tanzimat’la gelen modernleşme çabalarıyla yerini bulacaktı. Yenilik hareketinin başında bulunanlar memleketin siyasi terbiyesini sağlamak ve ona bir ufuk açmak için tarih disiplinini lüzumlu görmüşlerdi. Osmanlı Devleti’nin son yüzyılı, tarih anlayışları, tarihçiliği ve yazılan tarihler birçok çalışmaya konu olmuşken tarihin eğitim boyutu ihmal edilmiştir. Bu çalışmada evveliyatıyla bu süreçteki “Osmanlı Devleti’nde Tarih Eğitimi” konusu incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın temel kaynaklarını Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivin’den elde edilen belgeler, döneme ait tarih ders müfredat programları, ders kitapları, dönem dergilerinden elde edilen makaleler oluşturmaktadır.
