Nach einer theoretischen Einleitung zur Problematik der Urbanisierung und zum Forschungsstand wird im zweiten Kapitel die Entwicklung der drei St�dte bis zum Ende der deutschen Kolonialherrschaft dargestellt. Schwerpunkt ist dabei der Zusammenhang zwischen kolonialer Stadtentwicklung und dem gesamtgesellschaftlichen Rahmen der Kolonie. Kolonialpolitik, kolonialwirtschaftliche Durchdringung und die Funktionen der St�dte setzten entscheidende Bedingungen fuer die koloniale Stadtentwicklung. Aus diesem Grunde wird dieser Proze� nicht isoliert untersucht, sondern in seiner Einbettung im kolonialen Rahmen, insbesondere im st�dtischen Umland. Einen weiteren Untersuchungsaspekt bilden die Auswirkungen der unterschiedlichen historischen Ausgangsbedingungen. Das dritte Kapitel besch�ftigt sich mit den einzelnen Bev�lkerungsgruppen in den St�dten Deutsch-Ostafrikas. Das waren neben den Afrikanern, die zahlenm��ig dominierten, aber sozial und politisch unterdrueckt blieben, Araber, Inder/Goanesen und die herrschenden Europ�er. Es werden insbesondere Fragen der Herkunft der Bewohner, ihrer Besch�ftigungsstruktur und sozialen Lage sowie ihrer politischen und �konomischen Stellung im Kontext des Stadtenwicklungsprozesses behandelt. In der abschlie�enden Zusammenfassung wird mit einem Blick auf die weitere Entwicklung der drei untersuchten St�dte deutlich gemacht, da� bereits in der deutschen Kolonialzeit entscheidende Rahmenbedingungen und Elemente der Kolonialst�dte geschaffen wurden.
