"Overcoming Dictatorships explores art produced in response to the collapse of political authoritarian systems in 1989, particularly those of the Soviet bloc. A case in point is the visual work and discussions of ten artists who have bean selected and commissioned by 'Overcoming Dictatorships', a 2006-09 project generously funded by the European Union (EU). It aims to create a dialogue on post-dictatorial experiences among participants from countries designated as 'East' and 'West' Europe. Their works represent attempts to overcome collective identity formations of the past (i.e. the Soviet bloc, National Socialism and Fascism), critically engage with the fear of new dictatorships (including consumerism, globalization and mass media) and question 'western' political and social-economic uniformities (including the EU). Hence Overcoming Dictatorships challenges compartmentalized thinking and thus attempts to overcome authoritarianism. It is not the intention to add another pillar to a proclaimed European cultural heritage, but rather to contribute to bridging the East and the West, exposing the concepts of East and West Europe as in transition, which, as dominant cultural reference points for the contemporary visual, may also be on the way out, being replaced by an endless variety of issues, themes and positions." --Book Jacket.

A 'school' of photography, although it was never described as such, evolved alongside the famous Leipzig School of painters who taught at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig in the 1980s. How did the Wall in the Head come to replace the Wall that fell in 1989? The old identities of East and West, which all but dissolved in joyous embraces as the Berlin Wall fell, emerged once more after formal re-unification a year later in 1990. 2015 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of that German re-unification. Yet Germany remains divided; a mutual distrust lingers, and national history remains contentious. 1780 Fotografien sind zur „Schule der Freundschaft“, einem bilateralen Projekt der Bildungszusammenarbeit zwischen der DDR und der VR Mosambik, überliefert. In diesem einzigartigen Quellenkorpus, den Jane Schuch untersucht, manifestieren sich das Scheitern politisch-pädagogischer Erziehungsambitionen der DDR, die DDR-weiße Sicht auf das afrikanisch Andere und die Widerständigkeit der Jugendlichen. Für die mosambikanischen AbsolventInnen dieser Schule wird zugleich Fotografie selbst, jenseits pädagogisch-politischer Zumutungen, zum Spielraum der Selbststilisierung. Ihr Eigensinn durchbricht sowohl das politisch-pädagogische Projekt der Menschenformung als auch die Manifestationen weißer Hegemonie. Gleichwohl erweisen sich die hegemonialen Sichtverhältnisse als stabil, weil rassistische Stereotypen in den institutionellen Leitbildern perpetuiert werden. Die Autorin zeigt insofern einen empirisch fundierten Einblick in die pädagogische Praxis der DDR-Pädagogik sowie ihre stereotype Fixierung auf das fremde Andere, trotz der antikolonialistischen Rhetorik. Der bildanalytische Ansatz wird zugleich methodisch so weit und intensiv vorgestellt, dass die Arbeit auch grundlegende Erkenntnisse über die Rolle von Bildern im pädagogischen Prozess und ihre Möglichkeiten in der Historiographie präsentiert.
