Why are we so prone to guilt and embarrassment? Why do we care so much about how others see us, about our reputation? What are the origins of such afflictions? Philippe Rochat argues that it is because we are members of a species that evolved the unique propensity to reflect upon themselves as an object of thoughts; an object of thoughts that is potentially evaluated by others. But, the argument goes, this propensity comes from a basic fear: the fear of rejection, of being socially "banned" and ostracized. Others in Mind is about self-consciousness, how it originates and how it shapes our lives. Self-consciousness is arguably the most important and revealing of all psychological problems.

Thought insertion is the delusion that one's thoughts are not one's own, which causes people to believe that external agents have inserted ideas or thoughts into their minds. More prevalent in schizophrenia, thought insertion has been regarded as one of the most complex psychiatric symptoms. It is easy to see why it is such an intriguing phenomenon, as it blurs our understanding of some of the most fundamental aspects of our mind. Typically, discussions around thought insertion have tended to be featured in the context of philosophical examinations of broader issues in philosophy and psychiatry, or treated as a footnote to discussions of more prominent topics such as motor agency or the structure of phenomenal consciousness. For this reason, discussion of the phenomenon is incomprehensive and scattered throughout the literature, making it difficult to keep track of. Intruders in the Mind is an interdisciplinary attempt to bring together high-quality contributions to some of the most fundamental debates arising from the comprehensive study of thought insertion. Making thought insertion its central topic, this compilation gathers a series of essays that, taken as a whole, offer a broad and thoughtful approach to the clinical, phenomenological, conceptual, and experimental aspects of the systematic study of the phenomenon.

"The Intersubjective Mirror in Infant Learning and Evolution of Speech" illustrates how recent findings about primary intersubjectivity, participant perception and mirror neurons afford a new understanding of children s nature, dialogue and language. Based on recent infancy research and the mirror neurons discovery, studies of early speech perception, comparative primate studies and computer simulations of language evolution, this book offers replies to questions as: When and how may spoken language have emerged? How is it that infants so soon after birth become so efficient in their speech perception? What enables 11-month-olds to afford and reciprocate care? What are the steps from infant imitation and simulation of body movements to simulation of mind in conversation partners? Stein Braten is founder and chair of the Theory Forum network with some of the world s leading infancy, primate and brain researchers who have contributed to his edited volumes for Cambridge University Press (1998) and John Benjamins Publishing Company (2007). Suspect Others written by Stuart Earle Strange and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-30 with Social Science categories.

Suspect Others explores how ideas of self-knowledge and identity arise from a unique set of rituals in Suriname, a postcolonial Caribbean nation rife with racial and religious suspicion. Amid competition for belonging, political power, and control over natural resources, Surinamese Ndyuka Maroons and Hindus look to spirit mediums to understand the causes of their successes and sufferings and to know the hidden minds of relatives and rivals alike. But although mediumship promises knowledge of others, interactions between mediums and their devotees also fundamentally challenge what devotees know about themselves, thereby turning interpersonal suspicion into doubts about the self. Through a rich ethnographic comparison of the different ways in which Ndyuka and Hindu spirit mediums and their devotees navigate suspicion, Suspect Others shows how present-day Caribbean peoples come to experience selves that defy concepts of personhood inflicted by the colonial past. Stuart Earle Strange investigates key questions about the nature of self-knowledge, religious revelation, and racial discourse in a hyper-diverse society. At a moment when exclusionary suspicions dominate global politics, Suspect Others elucidates self-identity as a social process that emerges from the paradoxical ways in which people must look to others to know themselves.

Embracing the dark side, especially in the context of dark psychology, is a complex and controversial topic that has sparked much debate and discussion. Throughout this exploration of the dark side and its implications in psychology, it has become evident that there are both positive and negative aspects to embracing this darker side of human nature. On one hand, embracing the dark side can provide insight into the more malevolent aspects of human behaviour, allowing for a deeper understanding of manipulation, deception, and power dynamics. Dark psychology techniques can be used for both defensive and offensive purposes, equipping individuals with the tools to protect themselves from manipulation and deceit, while also enabling them to exert influence and control over others. However, the darker aspects of human nature can also have detrimental effects on individuals and society as a whole. Embracing the dark side can lead to unethical and immoral behaviour, as individuals prioritise their own needs and desires over the well-being of others. Dark psychology techniques can be used to exploit and harm others, perpetuating a cycle of manipulation and abuse. In conclusion, while embracing the dark side in the context of dark psychology can be informative and empowering, it is crucial that individuals approach these concepts with caution and ethical considerations. It is important to strike a balance between acknowledging the darker aspects of human nature and prioritising empathy, compassion, and ethical behaviour. By understanding and embracing the dark side in a responsible and mindful manner, individuals can navigate the complexities of human behaviour and utilize this knowledge for personal growth and positive change. Ultimately, the key lies in leveraging our understanding of the dark side to cultivate a greater sense of self-awareness, resilience, and empathy, leading to a more understanding and compassionate society as a whole.

The second edition of the book is now available. Please search with ISBN 9781947154001 This translation is the first time that this essential and classic work of Advaita Vedanta has been published in English, and in full. It is a consummate work of the spirit, an astonishing description of direct Nondual experience and understanding. H.H. Sri Chandrasekharendra Sarasvati, a Sankaracharya of the Kamakoti Pitha, has stated in glowing terms that the "Ribhu Gita" is to the Sivarahasya as the "Bhagavad Gita" is to the Mahabharata. First-hand descriptions of the experience of Nonduality are precious and rare. None is more powerful than this classic. Its uncompromising declaration communicates the uninterrupted direct experience of the Sage known as Ribhu. The language is accessible, forceful -- and points clearly beyond the limits of time and circumstance. The Indian cultural frame, traditional dialog between Guru and disciple, is subsumed into the directly penetrating insight that is absolute, beyond any concept. May we all recognize in this text the freedom and happiness of the Absolute, our True Nature, as reflected in the words of the great Sage Ribhu!
