Excerpt from Our Allies and Enemies in the Near East We have in these pages a vivid and picturesque description of the regions bordering on the Danube, and south of the rivers, dating from the very eve of the events of which they were destined to play so tragic a part, for the author only just suc ceeded in escaping from them before the breaking of the storm; and the contrast which this description offers to the conditions which we know to prevail there to-day gives additional interest to the record. A cruel fate has extinguished the glitter of Bucharest, with its superficial imitation of the pleasures and fashions of Paris; the heavy hand of Austria has fallen more severely than ever on Miss Bates's gay gipsy friends, and with more relentless fury on the simple peasants of Serbia and shep herds of the Bukovina; while by this time, we may hope, the privations of war have perhaps tamed even the swagger of the Magyars, and chastened the arrogant egotism by which the stupid Saxon colony in Transylvania proves the persistence of racial type. But although the external aspect - the life so full of move ment and music, of colour and joie dc view - which Miss Bates describes in her pleasant, flexible style - although all this must have undergone sad change in the last three devastating years, the mosaic of rival creeds and races which forms the social structure of the Near East will present the same problems as before. And as the complexity of this structure appears in every line of Miss Bates's account of the Balkan peoples, her work has a special value at a time when the threads of their destiny are being woven into a new fabric. Excerpt from Our Secret Alliance It would seem that the many books and articles thus far published on the European war of 1914 must have told the whole story, but certain events that have impressed themselves upon me seem not to have been traced in any, and so I feel con strained to point them out, especially because the evidence that-i shall present from Boer sources has never been published so far as I know, and should be laid before the jury of the nation and historians that will render final verdict upon this case. Excerpt from The Unholy Alliance: An American View of the War in the East The inexpressible grief with which many sincere lovers of England in America have watched her course, from the beginning of the Eastern question until now, may be some what assuaged by the growing reaction in our fatherland against any longer support of Islam by Christian arms, or any more acts of sacrilege against Christianity. When Mr. Cobden and Mr. Bright were the only prominent statesmen in England who stood faithful found among the faith less, many persons who regard any plan of public policy as worthless unless it has an aristocratic endorsement. Excerpt from The Allies There are two alternatives open to the British nation, said Mr. Haldane, in his speech at Newcastle on September 16th, 1906 either a general disarmament, which would solve many problems, if one could hope for it, or to put our national defences into such a condition that, as a nation and Empire, we could feel secure, whatever evil time might come to us. Unless the nations simultaneously disarmed, there would be no security against war unless we were prepared in time of peace to safeguard our own interests. Excerpt from Russian Wars With Turkey Man of the South.' The Eastern question will still be unanswered, and there will still be a dormant volcano which one day will convulse Europe. Ever since the year 1453, when the Turks conquered Constantinople, it may be said that they have been in almost a chronic state of dissension or war with their Christian neighbours. Up to 1683, when Mahomet the Fourth besieged Vienna, the tide of their conquest was advancing; since then it has been slowly but certainly receding. On three successive occasions their naval power has been destroyed by the combined fleets of other nations, and twice has England participated in this de struction. In 1571, at Lepanto, the fleets of Spain, Genoa, Malta, Venice, and Pius V., combined to destroy their navy; again in 1770 they were defeated by the fleet of Russia aided by Englishmen, in the passage of Scio; once more, fifty-seven years later, in 1827, at N avarino the Turkish navy was annihilated by the united fleets of England, Russia, and France. The Turks have not un frequently been called our ancient allies; it will be found on referring to history that they might with greater truth be called 'our ancient enemies, ' as up to 1840 we were nearly always allied against them. Excerpt from The Lies of the Allies: A Remarkable Collection The newspaper is-the silent preacher. We can read it and reread it. We can study it, memorize from it, and 'we do. There is something about black print staring up at us which impresses us. The spoken word produces an effect upon the ear, print upon the eye. It is a fact that the mind retains more from the eye than from the ear. Black on white' is the strongest color contrast and therefore the strongest visual effect is secured from the great black headline system of the modern press: Thus the news paper comes into our homes as powerful instruments of education, as visual or objective conveyors 'of knowledge. What a tremendous responsibility. Do our editors really appreciate their privileges and opportunities? Many. Of our people don't go to church. They might, if like the newspapers, the churches would come to them. Our schools don't go to them. All our public institutions of an educational character must be visited if we would learn from them. But the newspaper comes eagerly every hour - every day, and in greater bulk on Sunday. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Nationalism and War in the Near East: By a Diplomatist And war, as exhibited in the recent events in the Near East, was written, shortly after the Treaty of Bucharest, in the hope that it might suggest some warnings to Western civilization as to the fool's paradise in which we were then living. But already, within a year, these Balkan Wars have had their anticipated result in a European War; and the deadly danger, to the holiest shrines of civilization.
