In Our Bloc, Momentum co-founder James Schneider lays out an action plan for the British left. To move from defeatism to renewed confidence, he proposes a Left Bloc: an explicit alliance of socialists in Parliament, the Labour grassroots, the trade unions and social movements. In the wake of Corbyn's defeat, Schneider makes a bold argument: the central question is not whether to stay in or leave the Labour Party. Instead, we should focus on federating our forces - to strengthen our movements and voices today, and lay the ground to construct the party we need to enter the state tomorrow. Now is not the moment to scale back our ambitions. Climate shocks, rising debt, inequality and energy costs are hard barriers to neoliberalism's viability. If we can build power and prepare to seize the moment, we have a world to win.

A plan to win for the British left, from the co-founder of Momentum Our Bloc is a blueprint for a new combination of left-wing forces in Britain. James Schneider proposes a movement-party organisation that acts in society and in the Labour Party, through which party members, social movements, trade unions and socialist-inclined MPs could coordinate their political work. He adapts Chantal Mouffe’s theory of left populism to set out how the bloc could popularise socialist ideas and bend the parameters of politics towards its demands. Socialist perspectives are now rarely heard in mainstream public debate, after five years under Jeremy Corbyn when the left had some success in shaping political discourse. There is a large base of potential activists and an even larger section of the population available for mobilisation, but no central force to unite and organise them. Calls to ‘stay and fight’ against Keir Starmer’s failing leadership of the Labour Party are inadequate: socialists need a platform from which to do it. Schneider presents his Left Bloc as a pole of attraction for everyone seeking fundamental economic, social, political and environmental change. In this incisive book he sets out a plan for the next ten years: to build power, weaken our opponents and prepare ourselves for the next surge.

“Anyway, I feel like the longer we sit here the worse our odds get. Let’s just do it and see what happens.” No one would ever be able to have a summer like this again, although they didn’t know that at the time. It’s the middle of the 1980s, and the internet, cell phones, cable TV, all of it was about to change the world, but it hadn’t just yet. They’re saying goodbye to more than just their childhood and taking one last run through the neighborhood in this story about growing up, told by a kid who was there at just the right age. If you’re old enough to remember you might find some familiar territory. If you’re too young to have been there, this is the stuff your parents don’t want to tell you about. Up until now, summers has been pretty carefree for Pete and his friends. This one was not. He has an uncool nickname, his best friend Ricky lives next door with a stepmom who has serious anger issues, and they both have a problem with a former friend and current neighborhood juvenile delinquent, James Barlow. When James starts focusing his aggression on them, it sets off a chain of events that winds through baseball games, the longest and possibly strangest Fourth of July ever, an epic game of Kick the Can, trespassing everywhere, and generally causing minor chaos across the neighborhood. At the same time, Pete is learning that the adult world that he and his friends (and enemies) are moving towards isn't as simple as what he knows. Soon they’re going to be starting high school, and that’s not the only thing that’s going to be changing for them, and everyone else. But before it does, they have a one last chance to fully enjoy the way things were until they have to leave it all behind forever. The first of three parts.

Theoretical And Comparative Perspectives On Nationalism written by Taras Kuzio and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-12-17 with Political Science categories.

This volume brings together 15 articles divided into four sections on the role of nationalism in transitions to democracy, the application of theory to country case studies, and the role played by history and myths in the forging of national identities and nationalisms. The book develops new theories and frameworks through engaging with leading scholars of nationalism: Hans Kohn's propositions are discussed in relation to the applicability of the term 'civic' (with no ethno-cultural connotations) to liberal democracies, Rogers Brubaker over the usefulness of dividing European states into 'civic' and 'nationalizing' states when the former have historically been 'nationalizers', Will Kymlicka on the applicability of multiculturalism to post-communist states, and Paul Robert Magocsi on the lack of data to support claims of revivals by national minorities in Ukraine. The book also engages with 'transitology' over the usefulness of comparative studies of transitions in regions that underwent only political reforms, and those that had 'quadruple transitions', implying simultaneous democratic and market reforms, as well as state and nation building. A comparative study of Serbian and Russian diasporas focuses on why ethnic Serbs and Russians living outside Serbia and Russia reacted differently to the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the USSR. The book dissects the writing of Russian and Soviet history that continues to utilize imperial frameworks of history, analyzes the re-writing of Ukrainian history within post-colonial theories, and discusses the forging of Ukraine's identity within theories of 'Others' as central to the shaping of identities. The collection of articles proposes a new framework for the study of Ukrainian nationalism as a broader research phenomenon by placing nationalism in Ukraine within a theoretical and comparative perspective.

The Ballerina And The Bull written by Johanna Isaacson and has been published by Duncan Baird Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-19 with Social Science categories.

Our moment has seen the resurgence of an anarchist sensibility, from the uprisings in Seattle in 1999 to the Occupy movement of 2011. Against the vacuity and drift of financialized capitalism, proclaiming "There is no Alternative," these insurgent movements have insisted that an alternative is possible. In The Ballerina and the Bull Johanna Isaacson explores the occult history of US punk, hardcore, queercore, and riot grrrl, DIY culture, and alternative subcultures to trace a new politics of "expressive negation" that both contests the present order and gives us a sense of the impasses of politics in an age of depoliticization. "Expressive negation" registers the contradictory politics at the heart of these projects: the desire for negation that must be positively expressed. Drawing on first-hand experience, interviews, and discussion of the ludic, spatial, and sexual politics of anarchist subcultures, Isaacson maps an underground utopian politics of style and develops a radically new history of the present moment.
