Excerpt from Our Colonial Homes One end which I proposed to myself in this book, besides presenting house and home historically, was to gather up as many distinct types Of the colonial architecture of New England as pos sible, from the rude farmhouse of the first settlers to the elegant mansion of a later generation, as it seems to me nothing could give half so clear a picture of a century and a half of colonial life. It was this idea alone which could give cohesion to a series of sketches having little connection in themselves, except as recording fragments of history that had become scattered with the lapse of time. Most of them were written some years ago for Appleton'sjoumml; but by the addition of several new subjects, besides re-writing the old ones, the collection bears out, I think, the idea conveyed by the title of our colonial homes. Excerpt from Colonial and Old Houses, of Greenwich, New Jersey The great interest in later years to everything pertaining to the early history of our country has been an incentive to write the history of the colonial and old houses of Greenwich. The old town having been the place of my nativity, and home for many years, it has been my privilege to cross the threshold of many of the ancient houses, some of them the homes of valued friends, from whom I have learned much of the past. I have prepared the following pages with much care, endeavoring to preserve some of the history of that portion of the past which pertains to the home of the early settler. From the early records of deeds and wills preserved in the archives of the state, and now accessible by their publication, I have found names and dates not otherwise obtainable. I also wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society, for the use of its valuable library. It is hoped that these glimpses of days long gone, and the record of men and women who have made the old houses their dwelling place, may be of interest to the present generation, who should hold as a precious inheritance the memory of their ancestors, the early settlers of Greenwich. Excerpt from Old Colonial Houses in Maine: Built Prior to 1776 The sketches in this volume present a brief record of some of the old colonial houses that are now standing in Maine, and that were built prior to 1776. The work does not profess to be complete in its lists, nor exhaustive in its details, but rather to describe certain buildings that represent the development of the early colonial dwelling from the ancient log garrison house and first framed cottage to the grandest of our colonial mansions, and to give, if possible, a brief glimpse into the lives of the people who converted these houses into homes. Many of the houses now popularly known as old colonial do not, however, fall within our period; for they were not erected until after the Revolution. The three decades from 1790 to 1820, during which peace and prosperity became assured in Maine, were rich in stately homes built on the best colonial models; and examples of these houses are now found in nearly all of our coast and river towns. Such houses, however, since they are not truly colonial, are necessarily excluded from our present consideration. If the following sketches give to the reader a characteristic picture of our early colonial homes and of the life of the men and women who dwelt therein, the mission of the book will be fulfilled.
