Excerpt from Our Economic Life a General Social Science Throughout the centuries man has been progressing - more and more rapidly since the time of the Industrial Revolution. Large-scale production has given us powerful slaves in the form of machinery, but has made us almost completely dependent upon the machine, our life work and our means of enjoyment alike conditioned by its use. Division of labor has been the natural consequence of the establishment of the machine era, and as such division has grown more and more minute our dependence upon one another has become correspondingly greater. There are certain laws and forces continually at work in this complex life of ours, and many of us do not realize that they even exist. An American banker has said that the American people are "economic illiterates" - that we do not know the ABC's of the business world in which we live. Social problems resulting from our more complex lives are growing up more rapidly than we are able to solve them, while the corruption so often found in politics bears mute testimony to our ignorance of, or indifference to, those underlying political principles upon which all good government must be based. This book does not pretend to give a complete exposition of the economic, sociological, and political principles underlying our group life. But it does try to give a basis upon which the boys and girls may build a better understanding of such sciences from their own activities and from the information which they glean from books, magazines, and newspapers. Furthermore, it attempts to give them some standards by which they may evaluate the everyday occurrences of their everyday lives, and some appreciation of their share in the preservation and development of the group life. The sociological study of economic activity has witnessed a significant resurgence. Recent texts have chronicled economic sociology's nineteenth-century origins while pointing to the importance of context and power in economic life, yet the field lacks a clear understanding of the role that concepts at different levels of abstraction play in its organization. Economic Sociology fills this critical gap by surveying the current state of the field while advancing a framework for further theoretical development. Alejandro Portes examines economic sociology's principal assumptions, key explanatory concepts, and selected research sites. He argues that economic activity is embedded in social and cultural relations, but also that power and the unintended consequences of rational purposive action must be factored in when seeking to explain or predict economic behavior. Drawing upon a wealth of examples, Portes identifies three strategic sites of research--the informal economy, ethnic enclaves, and transnational communities--and he eschews grand narratives in favor of mid-range theories that help us understand specific kinds of social action. The book shows how the meta-assumptions of economic sociology can be transformed, under certain conditions, into testable propositions, and puts forward a theoretical agenda aimed at moving the field out of its present impasse.

The economics profession in twentieth-century America began as a humble quest to understand the "wealth of nations." It grew into a profession of immense public prestige--and now suffers a strangely withered public purpose. Economics as a Social Science is a highly readable critique of economic theory, based on a wide range of research, that endeavors to restore economics to its proper role as a social science. Contrary to conventional economic theory, which assumes that people have no free will, this book instead bases economics on the realistic assumption that human beings can choose; that we are complex beings affected by emotion, custom, habit, and reason; and that our behavior varies with circumstances and times. It embraces the findings of history, psychology, and other social sciences and the insights from great literature on human behavior as opposed to the rigidity set by mathematical axioms that define how economics is understood and practiced today. Andrew M. Kamarck demonstrates that only rough accuracy is attainable in economic measurement, and that understanding an economy requires knowledge from other disciplines. The canonical hypotheses of economics (perfect rationality, self-interest, equilibrium) are shown to be inadequate (and in the case of "equilibrium" to be counterproductive to understanding the forces that dominate the economy), and more satisfactory assumptions provided. The market is shown to work imperfectly and to require appropriate institutions to perform its function reasonably well. Further, Kamarck argues that self-interest does not always lead to helping the general interest. Economics as a Social Science examines and revises the fundamental assumptions of economics. Because it avoids jargon and explains terms carefully, it will be of interest to economics majors as well as to graduate students of economics and other social sciences, and social scientists working in government and the private sector.
