Excerpt from Our Economic Organization This book has been prepared for those who are beginners in the study of economics, or who are making their first serious study of the business of social living. It is an attempt to describe the way in which we live and work with one another in modem life in our effort to gratify our wants. The material is an outgrowth of a considerable period of experience and experiment both with secondary school students and with beginners in university classes in economics. The book has been used successfully in mimeographed form in a variety of institutions and has in its present form the benefit of many suggestions from these sources. At the University of Chicago it has been used, with much supplementary material,. in a course for freshmen. This course is followed by one of equal length on value and distribution. In the minds of the authors, the distinguishing feature of the volume is the effort to depict social structures in terms of what they do. The functions, the uses, the work, of banks, of business organization, of competition, of specialization, of government, of scientific management, of education, and of the other multitudinous agencies which together make up our modern want-gratifying machine, are the matters with which the book is concerned. It is a study of the devices which exist in industrial society, primarily in terms of their activities, and, quite secondarily, in terms of their structures. The more experienced reader may be surprised that separate sections on value and distribution, which hold such central places in many texts, do not appear in this work. The authors believe that in an introductory work of the type here presented the violation, if any, is chiefly to tradition. ÔThis excellent volume brings together some of the most interesting writings on economic organization. It covers a vast range of topics that fall under the heading of economic organization, and most if not all aspects of a variety of organizational economics and organization theories are presented. Interestingly, this book also extends beyond the more traditional approaches informed by economics and organization theory as it broadens the horizon of the field by including relevant contributions from economic sociology, cognitive psychology, law, and strategic management. Given its breadth and depth, this volume will become one of the standard reference books that will inspire both theoretical and empirical research.Õ Ð John Hagedoorn, Maastricht University, The Netherlands ÔThis important new Handbook of Economic Organization is a highly successful attempt to integrate economic and organization theory. Anna Grandori, who is herself a leading scholar located at the boundaries of economics and organization theory, is to be congratulated on doing a superb job bringing together such a high profile group of internationally acknowledged scholars. Each of the essays in the book are original and contribute to demonstrating the valuable insights that economics can make to our understanding of organization and organizational design. Anna GrandoriÕs introductory and concluding chapters are not only excellent audits of the current state of our knowledge in this field but they also give a strong sense of direction for the possible futures of the discipline. Anna Grandori is not afraid to face head on some of the more philosophical issues relating to ÒorganizationÓ as an object of study and is to be commended for doing so. The economics of organization is a new, exciting and developing field and the essays in this book will help to shape the research agenda that will take this emergent discipline to its next stage.Õ Ð Peter M. Jackson, University of Leicester, UK ÔThis sweeping, comprehensive volume is a signal effort in building bridges between economics and organization theory. With a stellar cast of contributors, it will both inspire and provoke scholars with its grand amibitions, and generate considerable attention and debate. A remarkable effort by Anna Grandori.Õ Ð Walter W. Powell, Stanford University, US ÔAnna Grandori has astutely organized the commissioned chapters of an intellectually diverse set of scholars into an absolutely outstanding contribution that both defines the current state of organizational economics and points the perceptive reader toward an exciting intellectual future. From traditional research areas to the newest topics of interest, the chapters chart the current boundaries of the field. The chapters are filled with gems of insight across several distinct levels of analysis, whether it is a discussion of organizational design, or psychological economics or innovation or the organization as language, the discussions are contemporary, comprehensive and challenging. No serious scholar of organizational economics should be without this book.Õ Ð Richard N. Osborn, Wayne State University, US This comprehensive and groundbreaking Handbook integrates economic and organization theories to help elucidate the design and evolution of economic organization. Economic organization is regarded both as a subject of inquiry and as an emerging disciplinary field in its own right, integrating insights from economics, organization theory, strategy and management, economic sociology and cognitive psychology. The contributors, who share this integrated approach, are distinguished scholars at the productive peak in their fields. Each original, state-of-the art chapter not only addresses foundational issues, but also identifies key issues for future research. This original and wide-ranging Handbook will be a useful and thought-provoking read for academics, students and researchers in the fields of organization, management and economics.

Austrian Theory And Economic Organization written by G. Nell and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-13 with Business & Economics categories.

The Austrian economic school famously predicted and explained the problems of calculation in a socialist society. With their concept of spontaneous order, they challenged mainstream economists to look beyond simplified static models and consider the dynamic and evolutionary characteristics of social orders. However, many feel that Austrians took their victory too far and became ideologically devoted to laissez-faire. Austrian Theory and Economic Organization is a collection of essays on problems and possibilities in economic organization, written by economists and political scientists with an interest in the dynamic and evolutionary nature of market economies. Each chapter explores areas of potential agreement between Austrian theory, market socialist economics, and other heterodox schools of economic and political science. The collection aims to bridge cultural and political divisions between free market advocates who stress individual rights and left-leaning thinkers who stress social justice and a culture of solidarity.

Economic Organizations And Social Systems written by Robert A. Solo and has been published by University of Michigan Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-11-15 with Business & Economics categories.

Robert A. Solo’s landmark work, Economic Organizations and Social Systems, presents a sweeping re-examination of the foundations of economic theory and the paradigms that shape the teaching and practice of economics. Written originally outside the confines of the neoclassical tradition, Solo’s analysis seeks to break from convention and provide readers with a new paradigm—one that places the cognitive, cultural, historical, psychological, and political dimensions at the heart of economic understanding. This expanded edition, featuring a new preface, calls for a transformation in economics: a shift away from narrow models toward a holistic social science capable of addressing the complexities of modern economies. Solo offers a comparative analysis of three distinctive forms of economic organization: decentralized market-driven systems, organizational market-negotiated systems (such as large corporations and unions), and centralized politically-directed systems (drawing especially on the former Soviet Union). Each is assessed for efficiency, incentive structures, justice in income distribution, the quality of the social environment, and—critically—their capacity for technological development. The book goes beyond technical analysis, exploring how national economies are built from multiple, interdependent components: the enterprise, political, household, and institutional sectors. The third part delves deeply into the roles of culture, ideology, and cognition in shaping economic change, using the Russian Revolution and the developmental challenges of the Third World as major case studies.Incisively argued and widely praised on publication, Solo’s work stands as both a critique of prevailing economic orthodoxy and a blueprint for integrating economics within the broader social realities of our time—a vital resource for economists, social scientists, and all seeking to understand or reform economic thought and practice.
