In preparing this book, therefore, the Author has sought to present to the average man, as if in personal conversa tion or familiar address, the results rather than the proc esses of much that is best in modern scholarship, and to emphasize the most important points by citing the words of competent authorities often doing it without crowding the page with a record of earmarks to indicate the sources of studies which have been carefully prepared.
