Anyone caring for or ravaged by a chronic illness, a need for hope and healing, or an interest in spiritual exploration, will be interested in Dr. Purdy's journey. This is a soul-searching human interest story for all. Our Sportive Origin: An Archetype for Healing (A Personal Story) is an autobiography, combining narration, journaling, and poetry to describe the life lived, being lived, by Dr. W. Randolph Purdy. At times it presents more-or-less like a stream of consciousness beginning with early childhood athletic experiences, early adulthood successes, and then the unraveling of professional and personal life due to a devastating, disabling illness. He reveals his life-long involvement in athletics, with its attendant injuries as well as its joys and values, along with his life-long need for learning. The context throughout the book focuses on the intellectual and ultimately spiritual underpinnings of athleticism. There is a cogent argument that our "sportive origin" provides the author and potentially any one of us with an archetype for healing and remembered wellness.

Sport And Political Ideology written by John Hoberman and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-30 with Sports & Recreation categories.

Across the modern political spectrum, left-wing and right-wing political theorists have invested sport with ideological significance. That significance, however, varies distinctively and characteristically with the ideology—a phenomenon John Hoberman terms "ideological differentiation." Taking this phenomenon as its point of departure, this provocative work interprets the major sport ideologies of the twentieth century as distinct expressions of political doctrine. Hoberman argues that a political ideology's interpretation of sport is shaped in part by the value it assigns to work and play as modes of experience; the political anthropologies of right and left can be distinguished by examining their resistance to—or affinity for—sportive imagery of their leaders and of the state itself; there exists a fascist temperament that shows an affinity to athleticism and the sphere of the body that is not shared by the left. Tracing modern sport ideology back to its premodern antecedents, Hoberman examines the interpretations of sport that have been promulgated by European political intellectuals, such as cultural conservatives and contemporary neo-Marxists, and by the official ideologists of Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, the German Democratic Republic, and China before and after Mao. As a form of mass theater, sport can advertise any ideology. But the deeper relationship between sport and political ideology has never before been explored wth such vigor. Presenting the first general theory of sport and political ideology to appear in any language, Hoberman's groundbreaking work is a unique and invaluable contribution to the intellectual and political history of sport in the twentieth century.

An Illustrated History Of Health And Fitness From Pre History To Our Post Modern World written by Roy J. Shephard and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-27 with Science categories.

This book examines the health/fitness interaction in an historical context. Beginning in primitive hunter-gatherer communities, where survival required adequate physical activity, it goes on to consider changes in health and physical activity at subsequent stages in the evolution of “civilization.” It focuses on the health impacts of a growing understanding of medicine and physiology, and the emergence of a middle-class with the time and money to choose between active and passive leisure pursuits. The book reflects on urbanization and industrialization in relation to the need for public health measures, and the ever-diminishing physical demands of the work-place. It then evaluates the attitudes of prelates, politicians, philosophers and teachers at each stage of the process. Finally, the book explores professional and governmental initiatives to increase public involvement in active leisure through various school, worksite, recreational and sports programmes.

From neighborhood coalitions organizing against the building of a sport facility for professional sports teams subsidized by public funds, to global campaigns for equity for women in sport, to worldwide bans of apartheid regimes, sites and levels of protest, resistance and activism have been present throughout the history of sport. Contentious forms of collective actions are now ever more present in various forms at the local, the national and the global levels. Sport and Social Movements: From the Local to the Global is the first book-length treatment of the way social movements have intersected and continue to intersect with sport. It traces the history of various social movements associated with labour, women, peace, the environment and rights (civil, racial, disability and sexual), and their relationship to sport and sports mega-events such as the Olympic Games. Based on research conducted by a multinational team of authors that draws on theories of social movements and new social movements, the book includes a valuable chronology of social movements, illustrations of key episodes in the development of the relationships between sport and different social movements and an agenda for future research and scholarship. Written in a clear and comprehensive style it is suitable for all levels of higher education, researchers and the general reader who want to know more about the role that sport has played in the development of social movements and campaigns for social justice.
