This book will be a source of help for anybody researching their farming and countryside ancestors in England. Looked at through the lens of rural life, and specifically the English village, it provides advice and inspiration on placing rural people into their geographic and historical context. It covers the time from the start of parish registers in the Tudor world, when most of our ancestors worked on the land, until the beginning of the twentieth century, when many had moved to the towns. Helen Osborn demonstrates how genealogical records are integral to their place of origin and can be illuminated using local newspaper reports, and the work of local historians. She explores the stories of people who lived in the countryside in the past, as told by the documents that record them, both rich and poor. The book will be particularly valuable to anyone who is looking for a deeper understanding of their family history, rather than simply collecting names on the tree.

"Our son asked me news of the whole world" were my grandfather's words at the dinner table following an interview I had with him. He was 90 and I was 21. Over a period of five years prior, my paternal uncle, Riario Moniz, was inculcating in me the pride in the Moniz brand without my realizing it. I was born with a special gene that makes me love and take pride in my family and their achievements, and for that matter any Goan who has excelled in the public office. I love my family and my Goan identity. This book celebrates the heritage of the four families, specifically over the time period of our parents' generation and their antecedents. The families are the Moniz (a.k.a. Menkar) and the Menezes (a.k.a. Godd, my mother's side), both from Curtorim. On my wife Ethel's side, the Pereira family from Margao (her dad's) and the Menezes from Raia (her mum's). It is the intention of the author to guide the family members spread worldwide and future generations to "know their roots." As a convenient one-stop reference, there are chapters which capture Goa's history, geography, migration of our ancestors the Saraswats, and social and cultural aspects of Goan village life, including our village cuisine.

Many family historians will come across direct links to ancestors who lived and worked in the countryside as farmers, laborers, landowners, village tradesmen and professionals for most of us have rural ancestors. Yet despite the burgeoning interest in genealogy, these people have rarely been written about with the family historian in mind. No previous book has provided a guide to the documents and records, from medieval times to the twentieth century, that researchers can use to find out about their rural ancestors and the world in which they lived. That is why this accessible and informative introduction by rural historian Jonathan Brown is so important. He describes the make-up of country and village society - the farmers, large and small, the farm-workers, the landowners and estate-owners, and the local business people, the tradesmen and merchants. At the same time he identifies and discusses the relevant national and local records, indicates where they can be found, and offers essential advice on how this information can be used to piece together the lives of distant and not so distant relatives. Tracing Your Rural Ancestors is essential reading for anyone who is looking for an insight into the history of rural life, work and society.

This historical novel tells the story of a twelve-year-old Chumash boy and his family who become captives in a California Spanish mission sometime more than 200 years ago. This is historical fiction based entirely on historical fact that reveals the devastating impact the missions had on California Native peoples. Written for fourth, fifth and sixth graders, the story ends on a hopeful note as a small group of Native children are able to escape their captors and begin a journey to join other Native escapees in a remote mountain village. As mandated by the California Department of Education, every 4th grader is taught the "Mission Unit," which perpetuates the "idyllic mission myth" that glorifies the priests, denigrates California Indians and fails to mention that Indians were actually treated as slaves held captive by a Spanish colonial institution. The manuscript has been reviewed and approved by the Director of the Santa Ynez Chumash Culture Department and a member of the California American Indian Education Oversight Committee. It has the endorsement of a fourth grade teacher in California who has shared the story with her class and a local librarian who is excited about sharing the story with elementary age children through the library. It has also been endorsed by the local library branch manager and a former professor of Anthropology within the University of California system.

Reflecting back to the 1950's much has changed in the last several decades. Today, we are able to freely share information, have numerous sources of entertainment and the human connection is all the ever closer. Growing up in the Northern Village of Lower Chaqala in Ashur Land ( Iraq ) - province of Barwari Bala, books were rare, televisions and radio were a luxury. We often found ourselves as children gathering at our village home to listen to stories of our Assyrian ancestors as narrated by my late mother, Helen Adam. My mother gathered many of the women in the village on the flat garden roofs under the moonlight and bright stars in the valley surrounded by the Metina mountains for an evening of delightful adventure. Some tales took our imaginations to far away places and as children we would eagerly await day after day to hear the rest of the stories. Storyteller, Stories of my Assyrian Ancestors is a homage to those stories retold generation over generation as I recall them. In 1996 I started a small project when I began writing these stories to keep in my personal collection. As I began to share them with family and friends, I learned the importance of publishing these stories as they carried many life lessons and was a part of our Assyrian identity that would have been otherwise lost. One of my greatest challenges was conserving the literal meaning and translation of these stories from Assyrian language (Aramaic) to English.
