Organized with the assistance of an international advisory committee of medievalists from several disciplines, Medieval Latin: An Introduction and Bibliographical Guide is a new standard guide to the Latin language and literature of the period from c. A.D. 200 to 1500. It promises to be indispensable as a handbook in university courses in Medieval Latin and as a point of departure for the study of Latin texts and documents in any of the fields of medieval studies. Comprehensive in scope, the guide provides introductions to, and bibliographic orientations in, all the main areas of Medieval Latin language, literature, and scholarship. Part One consists of an introduction and sizable listing of general print and electronic reference and research tools. Part Two focuses on issues of language, with introductions to such topics as Biblical and Christian Latin, and Medieval Latin pronunciation, orthography, morphology and syntax, word formation and lexicography, metrics, prose styles, and so on. There are chapters on the Latin used in administration, law, music, commerce, the liturgy, theology and philosophy, science and technology, and daily life. Part Three offers a systematic overview of Medieval Latin literature, with introductions to a wide range of genres and to translations from and into Latin. Each chapter concludes with a bibliography of fundamental works--texts, lexica, studies, and research aids. This guide satisfies a long-standing need for a reference tool in English that focuses on medieval latinity in all its specialized aspects. It will be welcomed by students, teachers, professional latinists, medievalists, humanists, and general readers interested in the role of Latin as the learned lingua franca of western Europe. It may also prove valuable to reference librarians assembling collections concerned with Latin authors and texts of the postclassical period. ABOUT THE EDITORS F. A. C. Mantello is professor of Medieval Latin at The Catholic University of America. A. G. Rigg is professor of English and medieval studies and chairman of the Medieval Latin Committee at the University of Toronto's Centre for Medieval Studies. PRASIE FOR THE BOOK "This extraordinary volume, joint effort of dozens of scholars in eight countries, will be in constant use for research, for advising students and designing courses, and for answering the queries of nonmedievalist colleagues. . . . Medieval Latin provides a foundation for advances in research and teaching on a wide front. . . . Though Mantello and Rigg's Medieval Latin is a superb reference volume, I recommend that it also be read from beginning to end--in small increments, of course. The rewards will be sheaves of notes and an immensely enriched appreciation of Medieval Latin and its literature."--Janet M. Martin, Princeton University, Speculum "A remarkable achievement, and no one interested in medieval Latin can afford to be without it."--Journal of Ecclesiastical History "Everywhere there is clarity, conclusion, judicious illustration, and careful selection of what is central. This guide is a major achievement and will serve Medieval Latin studies extremely well for the foreseeable future."--The Classical Review

The Search For The Christian Doctrine Of God written by Richard Patrick Crosland Hanson and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-01-01 with Religion categories.

First published in 1988, The Search for the Christian Doctrine of God is still considered by many scholars to be the finest work on the Arian Controversy. Examining scholarly works on the Controversy and many original texts, Professor Hanson, provides a clear understanding of how the traditional and historic doctrine of God as the Holy Trinity reached its most mature and enduring form. The author is not primarily concerned to defend the orthodox position itself, but rather to discover and examine the formation of that orthodoxy. The history of the events - the Councils, the interventions of the Emperor, the rivalries of sees, the behaviour of bishops, the varying fortunes of the different schools of thought and their leaders - is interwoven with the progression of thought and doctrine during the sixty years of the Controversy. Professor Hanson sees the problem of the reconciliation of two concepts which were both part of the very fabric of Christianity - monotheism and the worship of Jesus Christ as divine.

Speaking the Triune God extends the promise of the benediction, May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Spirit be with you all.” Rian Venter In this first volume on doing Theology in South Africa, Henco van der Westhuizen assembled an array of articles by South African theologians on Trinitarian Theology from 1976 to today.

Theodoret Of Cyrus written by Istvan Pasztori Kupan and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-09-27 with History categories.

The larger part of Theodoret of Cyrus' existant body of work still remains untranslated, and this lack provides a fragmented representation of his thought and has lead to his misrepresentation by ancient, medieval and some modern scholars. Theodoret of Cyrus presents a fresh collection of texts from all periods of his career, including two complete treatises (On the Trinity and On the Incarnation) as well as representative selections from two others (A Cure of Greek Maladies and A Compendium of Heretical Mythification) so far unpublished in English, with a critical introduction concerning his life, legacy and place in the history of Christian doctrine. This book provides the reader with a more balanced picture of Theodoret's often neglected, depreciated and largely inaccessible theological legacy.

Classical Trinitarian Theology for Seminary Students is a textbook on patristic Trinitarian doctrines. Part I introduces classical Trinitarian theology with the help of short discussion, definitions, and comparisons. It is designed for incoming seminary students, who have never formally studied theology. Part II is for intermediate students. It comments on three charts, which attempt to depict graphically the patristic search for Christian Trinitarian theology. This section is geared towards seminary students who have already studied for a few years and would like to revisit the classical doctrine of the Trinity at a more advanced level, but who are not really ready for engaging primary texts independently, whether in Greek, Latin, or English. Part III is composed for advanced students who enjoy tackling primary texts. It provides a list of some important Greek or Latin primary texts and the accessible translations in English

Trinitarian Personhood written by Bill Ury and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-02-01 with Religion categories.

The concept of the 'person' is a crucial yet elusive component in the development of Western thought. Few concepts are as replete with definitional difficulty. Equally important is the application of a proper definition to all major Christian doctrinal commonplaces. This work, recognizing the insufficiency of modern theology to offer a cogent concept of 'person', proposes a thorough historical and theological evaluation of Trinitarian personhood presented in three critical paradigm-shifts by which one can measure the development of the idea of true personhood presented. The three watershed eras of discernment of divine personhood presented are seen here as first, the Cappadocian position of the mutual indwelling (perichoresis) of the divine persons is contrasted with Augustine's view of the place of relations in defining divine persons. Second, the ideas of Richard of St. Victor whose caritas consummata and its relational implications met the nemesis of the Thomistic category of 'subsistent relations'. And last, as an example of this important discussion in modernity, the German, Heribert Mÿhlen's dynamic phenomenological approach to Triune personhood is offered as a means of countering the implicit modalisms of Barth and Rahner. If the personhood of God is in essence Being-in-Another then Christianity must apply that ontology to all sectors of reality to be fully Christian.
