Since about 1985, crop circles have become a more well-known phenomenon. In the meantime, about 10,000 crop circles have appeared in more than 50 countries. However, well over half of them come from southern England in the area of Stonehenge, Woodhenge, Silbury Hill, White Horse and other prehistoric monuments. Some of them can be proved to have been made by humans, but others just as certainly have not been made by humans - this is not the starting situation one would wish for as a researcher ... In the present book 300 of these crop circles are examined more closely. It turns out that they contain approx. 100 elements which appear in many crop circles. Their geometrical form has an easily recognizable meaning. Therefore, with the help of these "words", the crop circles composed of them can be read like "sentences". The meaning is almost always the same: a representation of how individuality unfolds. Therefore, there are many similarities with astrology or the chakra system, for example. This analytical approach is complemented by 50 dream journeys into individual crop circles, which makes the picture that arises from the analytical observation of the crop circles even more rounded. Thereby a first impression can be gained of the language of the collective subconsciousness - which words and which grammar it uses: It is a "music of geometry".

During the last few centuries, natural philosophers, and more recently vision scientists, have recognized that a fundamental problem in biological vision is that the sources underlying visual stimuli are unknowable in any direct sense, because of the inherent ambiguity of the stimuli that impinge on sensory receptors. The light that reaches the eye from any scene conflates the contributions of reflectance, illumination, transmittance, and subsidiary factors that affect these primary physical parameters. Spatial properties such as the size, distance and orientation of physical objects are also conflated in light stimuli. As a result, the provenance of light reaching the eye at any moment is uncertain. This quandary is referred to as the inverse optics problem. This book considers the evidence that the human visual system solves this problem by incorporating past human experience of what retinal images have typically corresponded to in the real world.

"The Cold War brought about increasing interest from scholars in the politics of national development and, in the case of civilian-led underdeveloped countries, the effects of military insurgency. Two ideologically opposed positions evolved around the phenomenon of military insurgency. The position of technological conservatism favors military insurgency in previously civilian-led governments on the presumption that it encourages stability, efficiency, and, importantly, anti-communism. The revisionist position, on the other hand, is highly critical of technological conservatism, especially with regard to its political fervor. J. Stephen Hoadley asserts that the relevant question is not one of ideological choices; rather, it is whether a military or civilian-led government is better suited for the political and economic development of a particular underdeveloped nation. Soldiers and Politics in Southeast Asia introduces the reader to the sequences of events that led to military predominance in Thailand, Burma, South Vietnam, Indonesia, and Cambodia. Hoadley uses the data of five case studies to test and quantify his hypotheses. The author characterizes governments controlled by the military as performing slightly less well than civilian-led governments inSoutheast Asia. Hoadley argues that while they are demonstrably less capable in responding to outside and domestic challenges, there is little difference between military and civilian-led governments in the areas of establishing stability and maintaininglaw. The evolution of the state from earlier forms of political organization is associated with revolutionary changes in the structure of inequality. These magnify distinctions in rank and power that outweigh anything previously known in so-called primitive societies. This volume explains how and why people came to accept and even identify themselves with this new form of authority. The introduction provides a new theory of legitimacy by synthesizing and uniting earlier theories from psychological, cultural-materialist, rational choice, and Marxist approaches. The case studies which follow present a wide range of materials on cultures in both Western and non-Western settings, and across a number of different historical periods. Included are examples from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the New World. Older states such as Ur, Inca, and medieval France are examined along with more contemporary states including Indonesia, Tanzania, and the revolutionary beginnings of the United States. Using a variety of approaches the contributors show in each instance how the state obtained and used its power, then attempted to have its power accepted as the natural order under the protection of supra-naturally ordained authority. No matter how tyrannical or benign, the cases show that state power must be justified by faith and experience that demonstrates its value to the participants. Through such analysis, the book demonstrates that states must be capable of enforcing their rule, but that they cannot deceive populations into accepting state domination. Indeed, the book suggests that social evolution moves toward less coercive rule and increased democratization. Ronald Cohen is a political anthropologist who has taught at the Universities of Toronto, McGill, Northwestern, and Ahmadu Bello, and is on the faculty of the University of Florida. He has carried out field research in Africa, the Arctic and Washington. His major works include The Kanuri of Borno, Dominance and Defiance, Origins of the State, and a book in preparation on food policy and agricultural transformation in Africa. Judith D. Toland is a lecturer at University College, Northwestern University, and the College of Arts and Sciences, Loyola University of Chicago. She is the director of her own corporate and non-profit consulting firm. She has done fieldwork in Ayacucho, Peru and has written widely on the Inca State.

How to sustain an international system of cooperation in the midst of geopolitical struggle Can the international economic and legal system survive today’s fractured geopolitics? Democracies are facing a drawn-out contest with authoritarian states that is entangling much of public policy with global security issues. In Global Discord, Paul Tucker lays out principles for a sustainable system of international cooperation, showing how democracies can deal with China and other illiberal states without sacrificing their deepest political values. Drawing on three decades as a central banker and regulator, Tucker applies these principles to the international monetary order, including the role of the U.S. dollar, trade and investment regimes, and the financial system. Combining history, economics, and political and legal philosophy, Tucker offers a new account of international relations.
