This division has much of the nature of an art, its purpose being to take the facts, principles, and laws worked out by pure science, and devise methods of utilizing them to serve some human purpose. Excerpt from Outline of Applied Sociology This book is intended to be just what its title suggests - an outline of applied sociology. Dealing with applied sociology, it concerns itself but little with questions of origins, and devotes itself to facts rather than to theories. Being an outline, it is meant to serve rather as a guide to the study of life in society than as a compendium of dogmatic sociological conclusions or a series of finished dissertations on social problems. In the preparation of this work I have been animated by the conviction that the time is ripe for a more thoroughly scientific approach to the solution of the problems of social advancement. There is too much of a tendency to treat each question as a thing by itself, and to forget that life in society is not divided into watertight compartments. I have therefore departed from the method of treatment customary in books of this order, and have sought to take a comprehensive view of the entire field of social life and social endeavor, to correlate in a systematic and logical manner the manifold aspects of the social organization, and to indicate the actual interrelationship between seemingly divergent departments of life. This I believe to be the true, and therefore the scientific view. Accordingly in this book much more emphasis is laid on accurate analysis and classification than upon the exhaustive treatment of specific topics. Should any reader acquaint himself with the whole, he will find it not only con sistent with itself, but progressive in the sense that each successive volume carries the subject a step farther with a minimum of repeti tion or duplicate treatment. The central thought is that of a true science Of society, capable, in the measure that it approaches completeness, of being turned to the profit of mankind. If there is one respect in which it differs more than in others from rival systems Of philosophy it is in its practical character of never losing sight of the end or purpose, nor of the possibilities of conscious effort. It is a reaction against the philosophy of despair that has come to dominate even the most enlightened scientific thought. It aims to point out a remedy for the general paralysis that is creeping over the world, and which a too narrow conception of the law of cosmic evolution serves rather to increase than to diminish. It proclaims the efficacy of effort, provided it is guided by intelligence. Civics: as Applied Sociology By Patrick Geddes This department of sociological studies should evidently be, as far as possible, concrete in treatment. If it is to appeal to practical men and civic workers, it is important that the methods advocated for the systematic study of cities, and as underlying fruitful action, be not merely the product of the study, but rather be those which may be acquired in course of local observation and practical effort. My problem is thus to outline such general ideas as may naturally crystallise from the experience of any moderately-travelled observer of varied interests; so that his observation of city after city, now panoramic and impressionist, again detailed, should gradually develop towards an orderly Regional Survey. This point of view has next to be correlated with the corresponding practical experience, that which may be acquired through some varied experiences of citizenship, and thence rise toward a larger and more orderly conception of civic action-as Regional Service. In a word, then, Applied Sociology in general, or Civics, as one of its main departments, may be defined as the application of Social Survey to Social Service. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
