Excerpt from Outlines of New Testament History The present is a companion volume to the Outlines of Jewish History published some months ago. It deals with the historical data supplied by the inspired writings of the New Testament, in exactly the same manner as the pre ceding work did with the various events recorded in the sacred books of the Old Testament. In both volumes the writer has pursued the same purpose and followed the same methods. Both works have been prepared for the special use of theological students, not, however, without the hope that they may prove serviceable to a much larger number of readers, such as teachers of Bible history in Sunday-schools, colleges, academies, and the like. In neither volume has it been the aim of the writer to supply a substitute for the Bible itself, but rather a help towards a more careful perusal of the inspired record. With this purpose in view, he has set forth such results of modern investigation as may render the sacred narrative more intelligible and attractive. Excerpt from The Student's Chronological New Testament (Text of the American Standard Revision): With Introductory Historical Notes and Outlines The exact chronology of all the books is not observed for Obvious rea sons. For instance, the Four Gospels all doubtless belong to a period after the Epistle Of James and some of Paul's Epistles. The Gospels, it should be remembered, are an interpretation Of the facts of Christ's life, in the light of much Of the Apostolic history and with some of the Apostolic literature already produced. A solid historical basis is thus easily reached in studying the foundations of Christianity which rein forces the Gospels. But as the Gospels deal with facts that antedate the Apostolic history, they must in historical study clearly be read before that history. Again, the Acts of the Apostles was undoubtedly written after many of the books Of the New Testament had appeared. And yet, since much of the story Of Acts antedates those books, the Acts must appear before the Apostolic Epistles. Where it is possible in con nection With the Epistles, mention will be made Of the part of Acts with which it corresponds. The effort has been not to follow a blind rule, but to arrange the books in such a way as to allow them to throw light on each other and in accordance with the known or probable historical facts, so that one can read in the Scripture text the story of the origin of Christianity and its actual development. Excerpt from Outlines of Old Testament History: Progressive Grade, With Written-Answer Questions for the Older Classes This Outline of Old Testament History has been prepared in the hope that it may be found useful in giving a clear conception of the progress of events connected with the history of the chosen people. One of the most important questions in the preparation of such an outline is whether the lessons shall be extended over two or more years, or be condensed into a single year. At first thought the larger number of lessons may seem preferable because they give time for a more careful study of details. But in outline study it is of the first importance not to dwell on details, for otherwise the outlines are lost in a maze of subordinate incidents. Such has been the experience of multitudes in the study of the Old Testament. The principal thing to be sought in such study is a comprehensive survey of the whole history, and the smaller the number of lessons in which this can be done the better. The details may be studied later as occasion arises. A careful analysis of Old Testament history shows that it can readily be treated in about forty topics, each repte senting a distinct forward step in the history. We regard it of primary importance that each of these topics or steps be covered by a single lesson and no more, so that the topic and its significance shall stand out clearly before the mind.
