Excerpt from Outlines of New Testament History The present is a companion volume to the Outlines of Jewish History published some months ago. It deals with the historical data supplied by the inspired writings of the New Testament, in exactly the same manner as the pre ceding work did with the various events recorded in the sacred books of the Old Testament. In both volumes the writer has pursued the same purpose and followed the same methods. Both works have been prepared for the special use of theological students, not, however, without the hope that they may prove serviceable to a much larger number of readers, such as teachers of Bible history in Sunday-schools, colleges, academies, and the like. In neither volume has it been the aim of the writer to supply a substitute for the Bible itself, but rather a help towards a more careful perusal of the inspired record. With this purpose in view, he has set forth such results of modern investigation as may render the sacred narrative more intelligible and attractive. Many of the difficulties which are daily being raised on historical grounds are also touched upon, and the biblical student is supplied with constant references to further sources of in formation. Excerpt from An Outline of New Testament Theology This Outline of New Testament Theology was originally prepared for the use of classes in the Hamilton Theological Seminary, and has been repeatedly used in the course of classroom work. It is now offered with diffidence to a wider circle, in the hope that it so summarizes the teachings of the New Testament as to be of some service to students of the Word of God. It will at once be noted that it claims to be only an outline. Consequently conclusions are often given without a statement of the reasons which have led to their acceptance, and all exegetical discussions have been rigidly excluded. This has been required by the condensation indispensable for classroom work, and no less by the author's conception of the scope of the science. Excerpt from The Student's Chronological New Testament (Text of the American Standard Revision): With Introductory Historical Notes and Outlines The exact chronology of all the books is not observed for Obvious rea sons. For instance, the Four Gospels all doubtless belong to a period after the Epistle Of James and some of Paul's Epistles. The Gospels, it should be remembered, are an interpretation Of the facts of Christ's life, in the light of much Of the Apostolic history and with some of the Apostolic literature already produced. A solid historical basis is thus easily reached in studying the foundations of Christianity which rein forces the Gospels. But as the Gospels deal with facts that antedate the Apostolic history, they must in historical study clearly be read before that history. Again, the Acts of the Apostles was undoubtedly written after many of the books Of the New Testament had appeared. And yet, since much of the story Of Acts antedates those books, the Acts must appear before the Apostolic Epistles. Where it is possible in con nection With the Epistles, mention will be made Of the part of Acts with which it corresponds. The effort has been not to follow a blind rule, but to arrange the books in such a way as to allow them to throw light on each other and in accordance with the known or probable historical facts, so that one can read in the Scripture text the story of the origin of Christianity and its actual development. Excerpt from Outline Studies in the New Testament for Bible Teachers Scriptures finds an abundant reward. There is need in our age of searchers in the Bible, who shall bring out of its treasure-house things new and old. In the Old Bible the most important themes are those which gather around the God-man, Jesus Christ. His coming to earth was the culmination Of all prophecy, the focus of all history, and the center of all doctrine; and the church which he founded has been for nineteen centuries the inspiration Of the world's progress. There are two subjects in the New Testament with which everv follower of Christ should be thoroughly acquainted, and they are its two most prominent themes: the life of Christ on earth, and the growth of the early church. In the life of Christ he should know the order of the leading events; he should grasp its principles, and should enter into its Spirit. Only as we apprehend Christ can we comprehend the truths taught. And inspired by Christ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament These Outlines are the outgrowth of fifteen years of study and teaching. They are designed simply to indicate the lines along which study is demanded if one is to understand the teachings of the Old Testa ment. NO effort has been made to present an exhaust ive review of the ideas which have been advanced by others in regard to these remarkable books, or to give completeness to the views of the author. Only such points as seem necessary to a correct understanding of the text are presented and these are stated in the briefest form, with such references as may guide the way to further study. If the position here taken seem conservative, it is not because the writer has ignored the later criticism or underestimates its value, but because the newer ideas do not seem to be sufficiently established to demand the abandonment of the older. Great gain has already come from the learned and laborious investigations of the new school of criticism and we hope for still richer fruitage in the future, but the results thus far secured are too vague to become a satisfactory basis for the interpretation of Scripture. Excerpt from Outlines of Old Testament History: Progressive Grade, With Written-Answer Questions for the Older Classes This Outline of Old Testament History has been prepared in the hope that it may be found useful in giving a clear conception of the progress of events connected with the history of the chosen people. One of the most important questions in the preparation of such an outline is whether the lessons shall be extended over two or more years, or be condensed into a single year. At first thought the larger number of lessons may seem preferable because they give time for a more careful study of details. But in outline study it is of the first importance not to dwell on details, for otherwise the outlines are lost in a maze of subordinate incidents. Such has been the experience of multitudes in the study of the Old Testament. The principal thing to be sought in such study is a comprehensive survey of the whole history, and the smaller the number of lessons in which this can be done the better. The details may be studied later as occasion arises. A careful analysis of Old Testament history shows that it can readily be treated in about forty topics, each repte senting a distinct forward step in the history. We regard it of primary importance that each of these topics or steps be covered by a single lesson and no more, so that the topic and its significance shall stand out clearly before the mind. These outlines have been arranged in accordance with this principle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
