Excerpt from Elements of Qualitative and Quantitative Chemical Analysis In this work the author has brought together what has already been published, separately, in the Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis, by himself and Dr. S. M. Babcock, and the Notes on Chemical Analysis, by himself alone; he has added thereto much matter on qualitative analysis, all of Parts III and IV on quantitative analysis, and nearly all of Part V. Of course no such work as this can be satisfactorily prepared without frequent reference to the standard treatises of Prescott and Johnson, and of Fresenius, in one of which the whole subject of qualitative analysis is very thoroughly treated, and in the other both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The author would acknowledge his indebtedness to these works, while claiming for himself at least some novelty in the arrange ment of the matter, as well as in some of the matter itself, in this attempt to prepare a book that is much needed in his own laboratory. Also, for valuable suggestions in the revision of the work for this edition, he is indebted to Professor Dennis, and Instructors Chamot and Smith, of the University. Certain modifications in the spelling of chemical terms, adopted, after very careful consideration, by the Chemical Sec tion of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, are used in this book. Excerpt from A Detailed Course of Qualitative Chemical Analysis of Inorganic Substances: With Explanatory Notes Some explanation of the origin and purpose of the present work is necessary. It arose out of the difficulty experienced in attempting to give a thorough course of qualitative analysis in limited time to large classes of students. The smaller text-books on the subject are too elementary in character to use in connection with such a course; they devote too little attention to the precautions to be observed to insure delicacy of the reactions, to the difficulties encountered by the student in actual work, and to the modifications of the process required in special cases. On the other hand, the manual of Fresenius, though complete and very valuable as a work of reference, is confusing to beginners on account of the complexity of its arrangement and insufficient explanation of the purposes of the various operations. The attempt has been made in the following pages to present an almost equally thorough scheme of qualitative analysis in a more concise and readily intelligible form. The process of analysis here given was based originally on that of Fresenius, but it has undergone a number of important modifications suggested by experience with it in the laboratory. Among these may be specially mentioned the directions for the preparation of the substance for analysis and those for testing for acids, which have been made as distinct and definite as possible; for it is with these two parts of the process that the greatest difficulty is usually experienced. Excerpt from Lecture Notes on Qualitative Analysis Although the advantages to be gained by teaching qualitative analysis by lecture are sufficiently obvious, it is a serious disadvantage to the student that the necessity of taking proper notes often prevents him from seeing what takes place upon the lecture table. This little book was intended to give concisely the most important facts essential to intelligent work in the laboratory, and thus give the student more leisure for observation in the lecture room. A comparative description of those compounds of bases and acids which are commonly found or used in analysis is first given, and afterwards a method of separation which experience has proved to be sufficiently simple and accurate, is briefly explained. This method of procedure from the properties of compounds to the methods of separation will also serve to show the way in which the more difficult problems of analysis must be solved. No tables for analysis have been given, since their use is of questionable advisability, and, if used, are much better drawn up by the student himself. Symbols have been used throughout for reagents for the sake of brevity, those used in solution being distinguished by the addition of "Aq."
