Excerpt from Outposts of the Fleet: Stories of the Merchant, Service in War and Peace How is this man recognized P He is not recognized at all. He is a sailor. The Church knows nothing of him except that annually it dispenses tracts, printed in block letters, to him and wonders at his stolid indifference. The State passes him by he is without repre sentation; practically cut of? From voting he cannot make himself heard. Thus the greatest race of sailor-men the world has ever seen is treated as a negligible quantity by the two great upholders of national dignity. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... homeward with grain I i the sunrise squall "A man who would go to sea for pleasure, should go to hell for pastime."--Old Saying. Dawn on the confines of the South Pacific, and a sea marching with brazen crests to thrash the torn edges of the island with the inappropriate name--Tierra del Fuego. Dawn. The sky aflame, slashed with coppery wisps, a "dun bank of clouds grouped upon an horizon glowing like a brazier, and two ships under a heavy pressure of canvas drawing foam-tracks towards the dim cluster of rocks perched eerily at the end of the world which they must pass. Men call them the islands of Diego Ramirez, in memory of the adventurous navigator who discovered them; but they stand to the south of Tierra del Fuego, and are cold, bleak mountain peaks from which the softer terrain has been washed by the greybeards of Cape Horn. A sou'-west gale roared in the rigging of these two ships. Seas leaped upon them, sweeping their decks, hammering at them, even as they leaped upon the island with its granite outposts; but the ships moved onward, carrying grain for the British nation, as was their destiny. On the bow and under the stern of each was a name printed in white lettering--Manitou on this, Jugg rnau.t on that. Sometimes the legend appeared through the driving-spume, sometimes the spume smothered it, and it seemed, that the ships had melted into the giant rollers which battered them. Grey air, grey sea, grey sky, flecked and whipped with coppery ribbons of cloud, and out there the still pinnacles of Diego Ramirez, foam-clad, cold, to mock them. It was a point these two must pass before the driving could be eased. They came together at dawn. Two hours ago neither had been conscious of the other's presence; now men stood on deck and...

After 25 years of service, Commander John Forest has had enough of the fleet. He is retiring to a real job on Earth, far from the frontier and the fleet to start a new life. His intervention in an experimental fighter at the Battle of the Markus Nebula over 20 years ago turned the tide against the Globurs and made him a hero. Now he just wants to change his life and get away from the fleet. The Globurs are the first intelligent species ever encounter by humanity in hundreds of years of exploration. First contact was during a survey and details are scarce as no one survived. Rim systems were attacked and overrun over the next few years. Globurs probe for weakness and attack without mercy. No attempts to communicate with them have ever received a reply. Recovered prisoners are insane, but the Globur do not take prisoners anymore. The tide was turned by a new strategy and a decisive battle at the Markus Nebula. The Globurs were pushed back and a stalemate developed along the rim. The stalemate means attacks and raids on civilian outposts and merchant shipping. In the interstellar space along the rim, fleet outposts and patrolling task forces continue to defend humanity. The imperial senate calls the war and skirmishes an "incursion." Over the last 20 years, things have gotten a lot quieter. No one has seen a Globur capital ship in years. The only thing the core worlds care about is the unnecessary cost of maintaining the fleet. Not much news ever really gets back to the core worlds and the "incursion is all but forgotten. Only those on the rims worlds volunteer for fleet service to protect their worlds. Things on the rim are changing. When a heavy fleet task force is savagely mauled and manages to limp back to their outpost, the unthinkable is revealed. The Globurs have an advantage that puts every outpost and rim world at risk. Fleet defenses, long relied upon to detect incursions and dispatch intercepts, may be rendered useless. Ships are lost and not easily replaced. The fleet cannot sustain the current loss rate and something big may be coming. The Senate agrees to dispatch the fleet's greatest hero with their finest ships on a "goodwill tour" that covers a desperate gamble. All this should have nothing to do with John Forest. He is retired, and his augmentation has been permanently deactivated. He has gone home and settled into a new job on Earth. He even has a new girlfriend and is beginning to enjoy himself as his replacement takes over his former duties on the rim overseeing the fighter operations aboard the flagship of his former task force. His new girlfriend is a reporter - and a smart one. She thinks he is being watched. John thinks that is ridiculous, but he does start to wonder. Sure he was a hero - but that was a long time ago. Who would possibly be interested in him?Only a few know the shocking secret he hides and John isn't one of them.

Some thirty of her Majesty's men-of-war were involved in this matter; say a dozen battleships of the most recent, and seventeen or eighteen cruisers; but my concern was limited to one of a new type commanded by an old friend. I had some dim knowledge of the interior of a warship, but none of the new world into which I stepped from a Portsmouth wherry one wonderful summer evening in '97. With the exception of the Captain, the Chief Engineer, and maybe a few petty officers, nobody was more than twenty-eight years old. They ranged in the ward-room from this resourceful age to twenty-six or seven clear-cut, clean-shaved young faces with all manner of varied experience behind them. When one comes to think, it is only just that a light 20-knot cruiser should be handled, under guidance of an older head, by affable young gentlemen prepared, even sinfully delighted, to take chances not set down in books.
