Kanes relates his own story and that of his parents, Soli and Caroline Kanes, who married in 1941 and lived in Amsterdam. After the German occupation his parents worked for the Dutch resistance, but in August 1942 Soli was arrested and sent to Westerbork. In April 1943 Caroline and three-month-old Levie were sent there as well; however, the baby was taken from the train by members of the resistance. With the help of Father Theo Verhoeven of Veghel, who also saved many other Jews, he was brought to that town. He was raised by Bertie and Susanne Fox, who owned the local inn and were active in the resistance. In September 1943 Levie's parents were sent to Auschwitz, where Soli was killed and Caroline was subjected to Mengele's medical experiments. In January 1945 she was sent on a death march to Austria, during which she collapsed and was saved by an Austrian couple. After the liberation she returned to the Netherlands, where she faced a court hearing in order to be reunited with her son; in 1952 they emigrated to Canada.

The Tottenham Outrage And Walthamstow Tram Chase written by Geoffrey Barton and has been published by Waterside Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-16 with History categories.

Not since the days of highwaymen and footpads had armed robbery been seen in London. Geoffrey Barton explains the political backdrop to the arrival in the UK of armed revolutionaries driven by their own frenzied missions, causing citizens to go in fear. Laws were passed to deal with aliens and terrorism but as the author explains the civil police were ill-equipped to deal with the problem. Although well known to local people, the Tottenham Outrage of 1909 when two Latvian robbers, Jewish refugees, intercepted a payroll has been comparatively hidden to the wider world (unlike the notorious Siege of Sydney Street which took place two years later). Resulting in the most spectacular police pursuit in history it involved a hundred police officers and up to a thousand citizens in running to ground two desperate police killers. The book follows every inch of the six-and-a-half miles and minute of the two-and-a-half hours of the chase. It also pays minute attention to the people and places involved as well as the aftermath. As former Head of Firearms Training Operations for the Metropolitan Police Service, Mike Waldren writes in his Foreword, ‘The officers…did their best relying on guts and determination to see them through an unprecedented incident.’ The first in-depth account of an iconic event - fascinating police, social and local history based on extensive first-hand research.

This book offers a revealing look at Rosa Parks, whose role as an activist and struggle with racism began long before her historic 1955 Montgomery, Alabama, bus ride. Rosa Parks: A Biography captures the story of this remarkable woman like no other biography of her before it. It examines the entire scope of Rosa Parks's life, from her birth in 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama to her 1943 enrollment in the Montgomery NAACP to the dramatic events of the 1960s, and her continuing work up to her death in 2005. Each chapter provides an exploration of a period in Parks's life, portraying the people, places, and events that shaped and were shaped by her. Readers will see in Parks, not an inadvertent tripwire of history, but a woman whose lifelong struggle against racism led her inexorably to a moment where she took a courageous stand by sitting down and not moving.

Florida Book Awards, Gold Medal for Florida Nonfiction Florida Historical Society Charlton Tebeau Book Award A leading Florida historian explores one of the state’s most consequential eras It was a time of stunning episodes of boom and bust, an era of extremes, a decade of historic changes that point to Florida’s future. In this book, eminent historian Gary Mormino illuminates early twenty-first-century Florida and its connections to some of the most significant events in contemporary American history. Following Mormino’s milestone work Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams, which details the dynamic history of Florida from 1950 to 2000, Dreams in the New Century explores the state’s tumultuous next chapter, a period that included the Bush v. Gore election, 9/11, the housing bubble and Great Recession, and the election of Barack Obama. During these years the Elián González story engrossed the country, Tim Tebow rose to football fame, and Donald Trump became a Florida celebrity. From hurricanes to Ponzi schemes, red tides, climate change, the “Stand-Your-Ground” gun law, demographic diversity, and more, Florida offered nonstop news fodder that reflected its extraordinary internal trends and its importance in the nation. As Mormino shows, Florida is a place of deep conflicts—North and South, liberal and conservative, newcomer and local, growth and conservation—with histories that can be traced back centuries. In 2000‒2010, Mormino argues, these tensions collided to produce a “Big Bang” that will continue to resonate in years to come. Mormino takes stock of this crucible of change and explains the social, cultural, and political intricacies of a state the world struggles to understand. Dreams in the New Century unravels Florida’s complicated recent history in a gripping, informative, and fascinating narrative.

"A SHOCKING INDICTMENT OF OUR SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND THE POLITICS THAT PERMEATE IT." -Raymond Shaffer, Nevada State Senator Lee Miller was a popular young professor in Las Vegas who thought he was on the fast-track to tenure. He had created an innovative study abroad program with the help of a distinguished U.S. senator, and had found funding for needy students wishing to participate. It was just his first year at the college, and the newspapers already had reported on his work. Little did he know that someone had other plans for the money earmarked for the needy students ... someone who would stop at nothing to crush Millers plans. This true story reads like a novel. Miller weaves an amusing tale of teaching at a community college in "Sin City" with the unpredictable twists and turns of a scandal involving some of the most powerful figures in the state ... a scandal that threatens to end the careers of several administrators at the college. "This book is extremely entertaining and very accurate. It is a very good read." Steve Sisolak, Regent, University and Community College System of Nevada "THIS IS AN IMPORTANT BOOK. IT SHOULD SERVE TO PREVENT SUCH MADNESS FROM OCCURRING AT OTHER COLLEGES." Alexander Greenfeld, former Professor, University of California at Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism LEE RYAN MILLER has taught political science and economics for more than a decade at colleges and universities in the United States and Japan. He is the author of two political science books. He also has written two epic fantasy novels (as yet unpublished). He resides in Modesto, California. For more information, visit his website:
