The Indian Army has fought many battles in the 52 years since independence. Most of them were fought against Pakistan. Some of these were fought against the Chinese, some against the LITE, some against Nizam of Hyderabad and some against the Portuguese in Goa. Some were fought in the mountains of Kashmir. Sikkim or Arunachal Pradesh. Some were fought in the deserts of Rajasthan. Some were fought with adequate resources and after deliberate planning and preparations while others were fought under desperate situations with whatever could be mustered to thwart a superior enemy. Some of these battles have been won, some lost and others ended in stalemate. Aspiring generals and students of military history must study these battles to understand why a particular battle went a particular way. This book deals with 11 outstanding victories of the Indian Army; Shalateng, Rajauri and Zoji La from the Kashmir War 1947-48; Chusul from the 1962 Chinese War; Hajipir, Assal Uttar and Phillora from the lndo-Pak War 1965 and Bayra, Sylhet, Basantar and Dacca from the lndo-Pak War 1971. The book narrates the background and conduct of these battles. It also tries to analyse the factors that contributed to these outstanding victories. It also tries to analyse the qualities that go into the making of a great general.

From a serving air force officer, an account of the wars India has fought The armed forces play a key role in protecting India and occupy a special place in people's hearts. Yet, standard accounts of contemporary Indian history rarely have a military dimension. In India's Wars, serving Air Vice Marshal Arjun Subramaniam, who has a Ph.D in Defence and Strategic Studies, seeks to give India's military exploits their rightful place in history. Beginning with a snapshot of the growth of the armed forces, he provides detailed accounts of the conflicts from Independence to 1971: the first India-Pakistan war of 1947-48, the liberation of Hyderabad and Junagadh, the campaign to evict the Portuguese from Goa in 1961, and the full-blown wars against China and Pakistan. At the same time, India's Wars is much more than a record of events. It is a tribute to the valour of the men and women in olive green, white and blue in the hope that it reaches out to a large audience, specially the youth. It highlights ways to improve the synergy between the three services, as too emphasizes the need to declassify material about national security. Laced with veterans' exhilarating experiences in combat operations, India's Wars fuses the strategic, operational, tactical and human dimensions of war with great finesse. Deeply researched and passionately written, it unfolds with surprising ease and offers a fresh perspective on independent India's history.

Limited War In South Asia written by Scott Gates and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-13 with History categories.

This book examines the origins, courses and consequences of conventional wars in post-colonial South Asia. Although South Asia has experienced large-scale conventional warfare on several occasions since the end of World War II, there is an almost total neglect of analysis of conventional warfare in the Indian subcontinent. Focusing on China, India and Pakistan, this volume, therefore, takes a unique approach. Regional rivalries between India and Pakistan are linked with global rivalries between the US and USSR (later Russia) and then China, and war is defined in a broader perspective. The book analyses the conduct of land, sea and air warfare, as well as the causes and consequences of conflicts. Tactical conduct of warfare (the nature of mobile armoured strikes and static linear infantry combat supported by heavy artillery) and generalship are studied along with military strategy, doctrine and grand strategy (national security policy), which is an amalgam of diplomacy, military strategy and economic policy. While following a realpolitik approach, this book blends the development of military strategies and doctrines with the religious and cultural ethos of the subcontinent’s inhabitants. Drawing on sources not easily accessible to Western scholars, the overall argument put forward by this work is that conventional warfare has been limited in South Asia from the very beginning for reasons both cultural and realpolitik. This book will be of much interest to students of South Asian politics, security studies, war and conflict studies, military studies and International Relations in general.

What does a high practitioner of the military art and sciences, a successful commander and trainer of men, and an outstanding general staff officer find in his thirty-two years of service and two wars? First, that political guidance and military strategic thinking are virtually absent in our affairs of the state. Higher direction of war is well below the poverty line. Singh autopsies the 1965 war as the main example of this poverty. Startlingly, he shows that when the war was joined, a fair proportion of field commanders who failed had already been found wanting in the eastern theatre in 1962. Higher direction was tentative and ad hoc at the Army HQ level. At the theatre level, forward command was being exercised by the theatre commander at battalion levels, who was unable and unwilling to read the big picture and act on wide open operational possibilities being presented on a plate by the enemy. This book lays to rest many operational ghosts of 1965.
