In De genealogie van de moraal keert Nietzsche terug naar een genre dat hij na De geboorte van de tragedie en Oneigentijdse beschouwingen had afgezworen: het traktaat. In een hecht doortimmerd betoog dat hij tussen 10 en 30 juli 1887 in één adem schreef, trekt Nietzsche de consequenties uit een leven lang denken over de waarde en de functie van de moraal. Het leidt hem tot beargumenteerde maar boude uitspraken over de oorsprong van het (slechte) geweten, de werking van de geschiedenis, en de moraal als uitdrukking van de wil tot macht. Vooral de beruchte passage over de joden als 'het priesterlijke volk van het ressentiment bij uitstek' zou koren op de molen zijn van antisemieten en rassenideologen. Waar Nietzsche zich op de waarde van de instincten beroept betoont hij zich freudiaanser dan Freud, en waar hij de relatie tussen schuldeiser en schuldenaar aan de basis van de civilisatie stelt marxistischer dan Marx. De genealogie van de moraal is een onomstotelijk hoogtepunt in het oeuvre van de controversiële denker Nietzsche, een polemisch boek dat de lezer nog steeds irriteert en verontrust.

In de 19de eeuw, lang voor het internettijdperk en de supersonisch voortschrijdende kennismaatschappij, zette een verwetenschappelijking in die een gigantische productie van geleerdheid op papier opleverde. Vooral de beoefenaars van de historische wetenschap gingen over tot een exploratie van het verleden als nooit tevoren en wisten het academische en culturele leven te domineren. Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) rebelleerde als één van de eersten tegen die soort historische ontwikkelingsleer en mat ook de toenemende kennis van de geschiedenis minder betekenis toe dan velen van zijn tijdgenoten. Merkwaardig genoeg onderhield een van de grootste historici van de 19de eeuw, Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897), een hechte ideële relatie met de 'antihistori(cisti)sche' filosoof. In De ongelukkigste uit 1843 schrijft de Deense filosoof Søren Kierkegaard dat het leven van de mens doordrongen is van de tijd. En met de tijd komt het lijden. Juist doordat we het verstrijken van de tijd belichamen, zijn we bijna nooit echt in het nu aanwezig. Sommigen leren daarmee leven door een thuis in het verleden te vinden, anderen in de toekomst. Dubbel ongelukkig is degene die zich de toekomst herinnert of het verleden verwacht. De hedendaagse mens, die niet eens beseft dat hij nergens thuis is, is misschien wel de allerongelukkigste. Het enige wat hij kan bedenken om aan zowel heimwee als de ratrace te ontsnappen is om 'even helemaal weg te zijn'. Paul van Tongeren onderzoekt in dit essay de relatie tussen tijd en identiteit en laat zien wat het betekent dat zowel ieder mens als de samenleving als geheel altijd uitgestrekt is tussen verleden en toekomst.
