Political correctness has hi-jacked our freedom to discuss one of the burning issues of the day. This book will inevitably be condemned by the politically-correct, few of whom will actually bother to read it. They are determined to turn Britain into unrecognisable regions of a multicultural amorphous European Union. For them, facts and other people's opinions merely get in the way. Which is precisely why we urgently need a full, open and -- if necessary -- controversial debate on immigration. This book looks at the facts and faces up squarely to many of the consequences of large-scale immigration and the urgent decisions Britain needs to make. By far the most important is to recover control of our own borders from the EU. The Foreign Secretary's announcement that Britain will allow all 75 million new so-called citizens of the EU to come to the UK immediately their countries become full members in 2004 astonished and horrified millions of viewers. It was a candid admission that immigration is out of control. Nine out of ten immigrants reaching the UK today end up staying here. In social terms, immigration is now causing serious upheaval that can only get worse. In political terms, immigration is such a hot potato Tony Blair and his ministers stare at this oncoming runaway truck like rabbits caught in the headlights. Which is why immigration, and the consequences of immigration, are in crisis in Britain today. Not that these are easy issues to resolve. This crisis is not centred on those who have arrived and settled. It is centred on those still coming, the sheers numbers in which they are coming, the illegal means they use to enter, the effect they have on local communities expected to accommodate them, and the short-term draining impact they are having on the finite resources of the UK. So here are the roots of our problem with immigration -- open doors, free movement, racial discrimination against the indigenous population, and the suppression of free speech. Even worse, the UK's current problems with immigration stem directly and almost entirely from our being members of the EU.

"The world's most powerful nation, and more than a dozen of the world's smallest, have been interacting for 200 years. Beginning with whaling in the 1700's, it has continued through many trades, investment, eduction, churches, media, diplomacy and strategic issues. As significant as the movement of Americans to the Pacific is that of 150,000 Pacific Islanders to the USA. This important book documents the growing interaction with the USA to the pinnacle of involvement in World War II. The importance of USA to the Pacific Islands remained high until the end of the 1980's but has declined since then on almost every dimension. While USA will remain significant for the Pacific Islands, its relative profile will continue to decline." -- Back cover.

Islands written by Stephen A. Royle and has been published by Reaktion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-15 with Nature categories.

From Charles Darwin’s enlightening voyage to the Galapagos Islands to moat-encased prisons incarcerating the world’s deadliest prisoners, islands have been sites of immense scientific, political, and creative importance. An inspiration for artists and writers, they can be lively centers of holiday revelry or remote, mysterious spots; places of escape or of exile and imprisonment. In this cultural and scientific history of these alluring, isolated territories, Stephen A. Royle describes the great variety of islands, their economies, and the animals, plants, and people who thrive on them. Royle shows that despite the view of some islands as earthly paradises, they are often beset by severe limitations in both resources and opportunities. Detailing the population loss many islands have faced in recent years, he considers how islanders have developed their homes into tourist destinations in order to combat economic instability. He also explores their exotic, otherworldly beauty and the ways they have provided both refuge and inspiration for artists, such as Paul Gauguin in Tahiti and George Orwell on the Scottish island of Jura. Filled with illustrations, Islands is a compelling and comprehensive survey of the geographical and cultural aspects of island life.

The thrilling account of an extraordinary journey in the tradition of Kon-Tiki In 1996 a 9,500-year-old skeleton was found beside the Columbia River, galvanizing anthropologists with the possibility that prehistoric humans reached North America from Asia by crossing the ocean in small open boats. In this compelling narrative, world-class kayaker and science writer Jon Turk relates his successful attempt to re-create this perilous migration. This story wraps an intriguing anthropological argument inside a gripping narrative about the sea, an ancient people, and the wilderness of northeast Siberia. Recounting his two-year, 3,000-mile kayak voyage from Japan's bamboo forests to the tundra of Siberia and Alaska, Turk introduces strong archeological and anthropological evidence that his expedition was not the first. He explains how the ancient Jomon people could have completed this journey 10,000 to 15,000 years ago and provides insight into the question of why they did it. Both fascinating adventure and riveting prehistory, In the Wake of the Jomon is destined to become a classic.
