In the course of the early modern period, the capacity of European states to raise finances, wage wars, subject their own and far away populations, and exert bureaucratic power over a variety of areas of social life increased dramatically. Nevertheless, these changes were far less absolute and definitive than the literature on the rise of the "modern state" once held. While war pushed the boundaries of the emerging fiscal military states of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, rulers remained highly dependent on negotiations with competing elite groups and the private networks of contractors and financial intermediaries. Attempts to increase control over subjects often resulted in popular resistance, that in their turn set limits to and influenced the direction of the development of state institutions. Written in honour of the leading historian of war and state formation in the early modern Low Countries, Marjolein 't Hart, the chapters gathered in this volume examine the main drivers, beneficiaries and discontents of state formation across and beyond Europe in the early modern period.

Vanaf de eerste helft van de zestiende eeuw concentreerde de Baltische graanhandel zich in Amsterdam. Daar werd het graan niet alleen door korendragers gelost, maar ook in open zakken naar de speciale korenpakhuizen gedragen. Daarna droegen zij de zware last via steile ladders naar de bestemde zolderverdieping, waar het werd opslagen. Aan deze veelal ongeschoolde en loonafhankelijke havenarbeiders heeft Amsterdam in niet geringe mate haar welvaart te danken. De graanhandel was immers de ‘moedernegotie’ van de stad. Net als ambachtslieden waren de Amsterdamse korendragers in een gilde georganiseerd en alleen leden hadden het recht om graan, zout en andere bulkgoederen te dragen. De corporatie kende geen numerus fixus en het ledental was groot. Door de eeuwen heen hebben duizenden leden, waaronder veel migranten, dit zware en risicovolle sjouwwerk verricht. Verder blijkt dat er wel degelijk een directe continuïteit heeft bestaan tussen de vroegmoderne gilden en de hedendaagse vakverenigingen. Met deze conclusie kan het langslepende academisch debat over de continuïteitsvraag eindelijk worden gesloten. Door niet alleen de organisatie, maar ook de individuele leden en de praktijk van het werk van alledag te bestuderen heeft de auteur bovendien een nieuwe dimensie toegevoegd aan de geschiedenis van de arbeid.

Haarlem wordt vaak neergezet als een wat ingeslapen, kleinburgerlijk stadje in de schaduw van het dynamische Amsterdam. In feite werd Haarlem door zijn hele geschiedenis gekenmerkt door industrie en een daarbij horende arbeidersbevolking. Al in de 17de eeuw was Haarlem met zijn linnennijverheid een belangrijk industrieel centrum en in de 19de en vroege 20ste eeuw, wel gezien als de Tweede Gouden Eeuw, groeide het zelfs sneller dan de hoofdstad. Er ontstonden grote volkswijken en volkspartijen als de SDAP/PvdA gingen de gemeenteraad beheersen. Haarlem wordt voor het eerst vermeld in een tussen 885 en 948 opgesteld document van de Utrechtse St.-Maartenskerk. De Utrechtse bisschop claimde daarin drie boerderijen terug die in de Vikingentijd verloren waren gegaan. Op de plek van die boerderijen vestigden de Hollandse graven een hof, die zich ontwikkelde tot een militair centrum. Uit die militaire nederzetting kon een stad groeien doordat in de 13de eeuw het Spaarne een schakel werd in de route tussen de Hanzesteden aan de Oostzee en rijke Vlaamse steden als Ieper, Brugge en Gent. Aan een stad van handelaren, ambachtslieden en steeds meer arbeiders werden politiek, economisch, religieus en cultureel andere eisen gesteld dan aan een legerplaats. Het bestuur en de rechtspraak kwamen bij belangrijke burgers te liggen. Ook het sociale, religieuze en culturele leven paste zich toen en telkens opnieuw aan als de stad een nieuwe fase van ontwikkeling doormaakte. Soms gebeurde dat geleidelijk, soms met geweld. In dit boek is geprobeerd het economische, sociale, politieke en culturele leven in Haarlem en van de plaats van die stad in haar omgeving vanaf de eerste oorsprong tot de huidige tijd in zijn samenhang te beschrijven.
