In het magistrale overzicht De Geschiedenis van Drenthe – een archeologisch perspectief uit 2018 schrijft Wijnand van der Sanden aan het eind van zijn openingshoofdstuk: “Wie ‘Drenthe’ denkt, denkt al snel aan hunebedden en grafheuvels. Drenthe lijkt onverbrekelijk met zijn verleden verbonden.” Als hoeder van dat verleden werd Wijnand in 1987 benoemd in de functie van conservator van het Drents Museum. Daarmee trad hij in de voetsporen van bekende voorgangers als prof. Van Giffen, prof. Glasbergen, prof. Van Es en prof. Van der Waals. Conserveren, dat wil zeggen behoud en beheer van de collectie, was daarbij een kerntaak, maar minstens zo belangrijk was het vertalen van wetenschappelijke informatie naar het publiek. Veenlijken, hunebedden en veendeposities vormden de belangrijkste thema’s van zijn wetenschappelijke werk. Gedurende 33 jaar heeft Wijnand zich in Drenthe met hart en ziel ingezet voor de archeologie. Dat is niet alleen in de provincie opgevallen, maar ook in de rest van Nederland. Wijnand heeft ervoor gezorgd dat Drenthe een vooraanstaande rol bleef spelen op het vlak van de archeologie. Bij zijn afscheid brengen maar liefst 25 collega’s uit het hele land een meer dan terechte hommage aan Wijnand. Met de keur aan artikelen in dit liber amicorum met de titel Overpeinzingen op een vuilnisbelt spreken zijn archeologische vakbroeders en -zusters hun grote waardering voor Wijnand uit.

Wijnaldum is nowadays an unassuming rural village in the north of the province of Friesland, no more than a small dot on the map of the Netherlands. But during the Early Middle Ages, this probably was a lively political center, a kingdom, with intensive contacts with other kingdoms along the North Sea coasts, and with the Frankish realm to the south. The search for the king that resided at Wijnaldum was the major goal of the excavations that were carried out at the terp Wijnaldum-Tjitsma between 1991 and 1993. These excavations yielded a wealth of information, although tangible remains of the king or a royal residence were not found. What was found was a lot of pottery. The ceramic assemblage from the first Millennium consists of local handmade and imported wheel-thrown pottery, revealing contacts with the wider world. The first results and an overview of the habitation phases were published in 1999, in Volume 1 of The Excavations at Wijnaldum. The ceramic assemblage, and its consequences for the habitation history of Wijnaldum, are the main subjects of this second volume.

Edu Borger maakte een keuze uit het veelal autobiografische proza van Nerval, waarin het thema van de dubbelganger veelvuldig aan bod komt en het parcours van zijn waanzin (Aurélia) lucide in kaart wordt gebracht. Naast het door Proust bewonderde Sylvie werd ook een ruime keuze uit de correspondentie van Nerval opgenomen waarin zijn getourmenteerde bestaan ongeschminkt over het voetlicht komt.
