Cet ouvrage collectif est le deuxième tome consacré à la " Pédiatrie sociale ou l'enfant dans son environnement ". Dans le premier tome, paru en 2004, les auteurs rapportaient l'évolution du concept de pédiatrie sociale vers celui, plus large, de promotion de la santé de l'enfant et de l'adolescent dans son environnement sociétal et familial. Face à une médecine de plus en plus sophistiquée et contrainte dans des objectifs de maîtrise comptable, il est important de garder une vision globale de la santé de l'enfant et de sa famille en se préoccupant du retentissement de son environnement sur son développement. Les coordinateurs de ce livre sont deux anciens présidents du Club International de Pédiatrie Sociale (CIPS) qui, depuis plus de 40 ans, regroupe des professionnels francophones de l'enfance et de l'adolescence, quelle que soit leur profession. Ils ont choisi des thèmes qui ont, pour la plupart, été discutés lors des deux réunions annuelles du CIPS avec des échanges interdisciplinaires. Ils veulent particulièrement rendre hommage à l'un des leurs, le Dr Maurice Titran, longtemps directeur du Centre d'Action Médico-sociale Précoce à Roubaix, fidèle membre du Club et malheureusement décédé pendant la rédaction de cet ouvrage. Les sujets traités sont variés et pourraient n'avoir aucun lien entre eux ; ils ont en fait une préoccupation commune, celle de promouvoir la santé de l'enfant et de l'adolescent, que ce soit en Europe, au Québec ou au Liban. A côté des sujets classiques dits de pédiatrie sociale dont ils développent certains aspects plus novateurs (réseaux de santé, petite enfance, dépistage, éducation thérapeutique, adolescence, adoption, accidents, enfance handicapée, maltraitante...), ils abordent des questions plus rarement traitées dans un ouvrage médical, telles que l'adolescent emprisonné, le nourrisson avec sa mère en prison, les enfants de parents incarcérés, l'enfant et la guerre, l'enfant et l'animal, l'enfant confronté au divorce de ses parents, sujets illustrant l'influence de l'environnement sur le développement de l'enfant.
