P�O BAROJA Y NESSI naci� en Vera del Bidasoa (Guip�zcoa) en 1872. Estudi� medicina, doctor�ndose con un estudio sobre "el dolor". Ejerci� durante un tiempo como m�dico rural en Cestona, aunque no tard� en abandonar la profesi�n. Desde el punto de vista ideol�gico, destacan en Baroja dos aspectos: en primer lugar, el pesimismo, su mundo es ca�tico y sin sentido, la vida absurda; y en segundo lugar cabe notar la absoluta desconfianza en el hombre. Abell�n destaca tres notas como esencialmente barojianas: el anhelo de sinceridad, el af�n de independencia y el gusto por la acci�n. En el aspecto pol�tico, desde su juventud se mostr� indiferente e incluso despreciativo ante los partidos y los hombres de partido. En el aspecto religioso fue anticlerical y esc�ptico y autodidacta en el filos�fico y cient�fico. Kant tiene una influencia b�sica en su obra e hizo suyas muchas de las ideas de Nietzsche como el elogio del individualismo, el desprecio por el cristianismo, por la masa, por la democracia. Sin embargo, es en Schopenhauer en quien encuentra Baroja un pensamiento con el que se identifican plenamente su pesimismo y su escepticismo vital. Cultiv� casi exclusivamente la novela, llegando a escribir 66 obras de este g�nero, adem�s de art�culos, memorias y cuentos. Muri� en Madrid en 1956.

Starting from the premise that Spain has been neglected in studies which assess the evolution of the European novel at the turn of the twentieth century, and challenging the insular concept of the 'Generation of 1898', the author reassesses the relationship between Baroja and English literature. Particular emphasis is given to renderings of consciousness, the role and identity of the artist, European landscapes, and questions of form, genre and representation in the novels under scrutiny. The book produces new readings of Baroja in the context of early twentieth-century English fiction.
