Antes de levantar qualquer bandeira em relação às disputas políticas e acadêmicas acerca dos processos de exclusão e inclusão de jovens surdos, a obra de Maria José dos Santos Silva convida a uma discussão e reflexão com foco na construção de singularidades da trajetória socioeducacional, a partir das seguintes questões: quem são os jovens surdos brasileiros? Quais as práticas sociais e culturais desenvolvidas por pessoas surdas que nasceram e foram criadas em uma pequena localidade que possui formas de organização sociocultural distintas das grandes e médias cidades brasileiras? O sociólogo Bourdieu alertava para a complexidade das relações e práticas de diferentes comunidades na sociedade moderna, ressaltando que as identidades sociais são processos de trajetórias ímpares, marcadas pelas relações interpessoais construídas em espaços sociais e geográficos concretos, que, ao mesmo tempo, possuem formas que são comuns a espaços mais amplos (estado, nação, humanidade) e peculiaridades sociais cujas características foram historicamente construídas. É nessa perspectiva que Meio social e surdez: trajetória socioeducacional de jovens surdos foi produzido. Nas palavras de José Geraldo S. Bueno, "a autora acrescenta contribuição significativa para as investigações que têm sido desenvolvidas na perspectiva crítica de que as identidades das pessoas surdas constroem-se com base somente na configuração de comunidades surdas, cujo traço comum é a utilização da Língua de Sinais. Nesse sentido, esta obra não deve ser encarada como uma investigação restrita ao mundo da surdez, mas, pela forma como foi construída, merece ser lida por todos que se preocupam com a relação indivíduo-meio social".
