American popular magazines play a role in our culture similar to that of public historians, Carolyn Kitch contends. In the present collection of articles by Malcolm Parkes two overarching concerns emerge: the palaeography of manuscript books in relation to what Parkes has previously called the 'grammar of legibility'; and the importance of considering the circumstances in which medieval books were produced, copied and read. This is a compilation of work submitted by members of the Glen Bishop Family. Its contents represent our experiences, ideas, desires, and dreams. In its entirety, it is comprised of a mere few hundred pages. But make no mistake, the effort put forth to produce it, required many hundreds of hours of work, over several decades. The world is a massive place with billions of inhabitants. Out of that myriad of population, there are but a few people, percentage wise, who leave their mark on history and are remembered through the ages. You and I will be lucky if, after our deaths, we are remembered by two generations - our children and their children. Beyond that, most of us pass quietly into the dust of antiquity, not to be thought of again. I hope those words didn't ruin your day or put you off so that you don't read beyond this paragraph. God Forbid!! You see, that's the point I want to make here when I tell you that the only thing that really endures through time, is the "written word." If you don't believe me, check out the Bible or the Koran or the Torah - how long have they been around? And so, I encourage you, yes you, to write down your thoughts and experiences, good and bad. Capture the Ideas or dreams or memorable events that have occurred within your lifetime. It doesn't have to be a book or a lengthy story. It can be a diary or a journal or simply words on a notepad. That is what we have attempted to do with this publication so that future generations may have an understanding and an appreciation for those of us who came before.
