How can pictures help people to relate to God, and what can historical Christian images offer the viewer today? A compelling theological encounter between Renaissance frescoes and the modern viewer. Transformations in Persons and Paint looks at images from the viewer's position, standing in a series of Florentine chapels, surrounded by frescoes, and discovering their powerful capacity to communicate what it means to live in a post-Resurrection world. Proving that there is still plenty to say about works by Giotto, Taddeo Gaddi, Masolino, Masaccio, Fra Angelico, and Ghirlandaio, this book uncovers previously overlooked theological content, and demonstrates the rewards of attentive interaction between a modern viewer and historical images. Within the growing body of work on theology and the arts, this is a rare example of what can happen when a theological gaze is turned towards some of the classics in the canon of Christian art, while speaking directly to the modern viewer. Chloe Reddaway offers a new model of theological viewing, inhabiting both period and modern perspectives, and reinvigorating our understanding of the incarnational nature of Christian art by taking account of the particular physicality of images, especially as it is experienced through sacred space within and around them. Through close and imaginative encounters with images, a series of critical-devotional interpretations transforms beautiful artefacts into living explorations of the Incarnation and its consequences, the transformation and transfiguration that it enables, the particularity and interconnectedness of the created world, the generative capacity of liminal and (apparently) empty spaces, and the nature of vocation and conformity to Christ.

Marlene Dumas (born in 1953 in Capetown, South Africa) is one of the most prominent and influential painters working today. In an era dominated by the mass media and a proliferation of images, her work is a testament to the meaning and potency of painting. Her intense, psychologically-charged works explores themes such as sexuality, love, death and guilt, often referencing art history and current affairs. Dumas often draws on her expansive visual archive for inspiration and uses the nuances of language to great effect. Her paintings and drawings are characterised by their extraordinary immediacy, expressiveness and sometimes controversial subject matter. This fully-illustrated exhibition catalogue accompanies a major exhibition at Tate Modern in 2015, curated by Tate, the Stendelijk Museum and the Fondation Beyeler in close collaboration with the artist. It will provide a survey of the artist's remarkable oeuvre from the mid-70s to the present day. It will include over 100 artworks displaying her most important paintings and drawings alongside lesser-known works from the early period of her career. Essays from a wide range of contributors will examine the key themes and motifs in her work and will reflect on Dumas' entire career.

Painting With Words Writing With Pictures written by Franco Ricci and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-01-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Ricci's book ranges widely over Calvino's oeuvre to illustrate the accuracy of the idea articulated by Calvino himself that a visual image lies at the origin of all his narrative. The book's main theme is the difficult interface between word and image that Calvino struggled with throughout his career, the act of perception that rendered visible that which was invisible and transformed what was seen into what is read. Ricci holds that Calvino's narrative has an 'imagocentric' program and that his literary strategy is 'ekphrastic' i.e. it is characterized by literary description of visual representation, real or imaginary. The book is interdisciplinary in nature and will interest not only scholars of literature but also those who work with the visual arts and with information technology.
