One of the twentieth century’s most influential texts on philosophical aesthetics Painting as an Art is acclaimed philosopher Richard Wollheim’s encompassing vision of how to view art. Transcending the traditional boundaries of art history, Wollheim draws on his three great passions—philosophy, psychology, and art—to present an illuminating theory of the very experience of art. He shows how to unlock the meaning of a painting by retrieving—almost reenacting—the creative activity that produced it. In order to fully appreciate a work of art, Wollheim argues, critics must bring a much richer conception of human psychology than they have in the past. This classic book points the way to discovering what is most profound and subtle about paintings by major artists such as Titian, Bellini, and de Kooning.

Excerpt from What Is Art?: Studies in the Technique and Criticism of Painting For twenty years there has been discussion of art from the point of view of the connoisseur, the collector, the museum director. It seems we are in some danger of forgetting that there is another point of view - that of the artist, the producer. We have become so interested in art as a commodity, or a curiosity, that we have possibly overlooked the fact that art may be regarded merely as art, or even as something of use and purpose. We are in further danger of forgetting that art in a state must come out of the state and represent its time and its people, and that foreign importations or methods or motives will not answer as a substitute. The gathering of art-plunder from all quarters of the globe may eventually make us a nation of experts, but never a nation of artists, nor an artistic people. What Is Painting Second Edition written by Julian Bell and has been published by Thames & Hudson this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-05 with Art categories.

At the turn of the twenty-first century, many felt sceptical or confused about paintings on-going cultural relevance. In this context, Julian Bells What is Painting? provided an accessible and inspired account of artistic thinking and practice, and of the complexities then facing artists and their audiences. Eighteen years on, the situation is partly reversed. Painting has proved too resilient a practice to be marginalized any longer. Yet is there any sense of forward momentum for the art? Interrogating the factors that have changed our ideas of painting over the past two centuries, Bell addresses relations between figuration and abstraction and between narrative and non-narrative painting, as well as the waning of conceptual arts dominance and the proliferation of experiments with the physical limits of painting. He also clarifies general concepts such as expression and representation. Fully revised to provide a fresh look at the situation of painting, this new edition maintains the objective of lucid, historically informative explanation that earned the original edition its status as a text of lasting value. The book provides a general readers introduction to theories of painting that is not only reliable, but also stimulating and amusing to read.

What Is Art written by John C Van Dyke and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-31 with categories.

Professor Van Dyke's book is not, as its title might imply, a treatise on esthetics, but a group of half a dozen essays put forth as argument "not only for art as art. but for art as an expression of life; that and its decorative and utilitarian aim are its sole appeals; they never should have been lost sight of for a moment; in the appreciation of art the commercial phase of it is irrelevant and wholly negligible." In bulk it is only a little book that can be carried in the coat pocket, but none more suggestive and stimulating on its theme has appeared in several seasons. We in America, Mr. Van Dyke holds, have become so interested in art as a commodity, or a curiosity, that we are in danger of forgetting that art may be regarded purely as art, or even as something of use and purpose. We have taken our noti0ns of art too much from dealers, collectors and museum directors, and have thus been led into historic and commercial fallacy. We are "in danger of forgetting that name and price and pedigree have nothing whatever to do with excellence or its absence in a work of art. The canvas that will not stand without a signature, a hall mark, or a dollar mark cannot stand long by virtue of them." The devotees of only the rare and the dear he castigates as enemies of sane art appreciation. But the modern artist himself is not blameless in this matter, for by a too strict adherence to the model he has allowed his powers of visual memory and invention to become atrophied-has "caught at the form and missed the spirit." One of the best chapters in the book is that on "The Use of the Model," which is a relentless but salutary exposure of the extreme literalness that vitiates so much of contemporary art. He makes a strong plea for an intelligent patronage and appreciation of our own art, which he finds "neither despicable nor negligible, the higher criticism seems disposed both to sneer 'at it and neglect it." He champions the much maligned skyscraper, in that it fulfils its purpose and is picturesque, is our only original style in architecture, and embodies a new principle in construction. He points out that: "We shall not be great in art or its appreciation, nor shall we in any wise become an artistic people, until we put aside our foreign baubles and do our own things, with our own materials, in our own way . . . the inspiration of a nation's art never came out of the junkshop.
