Painting on Stage is the first full-length study of image-text relations in the twentieth-century Spanish theater. It examines a series of dramas that express the theatrical tension between images and verbal language through their interrogation of the visual arts. Written by central dramatists of the twentieth century (Ramon del Valle-Inclan, Rafael Alberti, Antonio Buero Vallejo, Fernando Arrabal, Jeronimo Lopez Mozo, Francisco Torres Monreal, and Paloma Pedrero), each drama 'stages' a painting or series of paintings and, in so doing, stages a central tension inherent in all theater and predominant in twentieth-century plastic art, that is, the tension between visual images and language.

The intertwining of visual and musical arts at the beginning of the 20th century led to modernism, abstraction and in music, atonality. This meeting of the arts was never so intense as on the operatic stage. In her book 'Painting the Stage. Opera and Art', curator and art and music critic Denise Wendel-Poray first examines historic productions beginning with Schinkel's iconic stage design for Mozart's 'Magic Flute', before exploring those of the 20th century with Diaghilev and the Bellets Russes and the implication of avant-garde artists in opera up until World War II. The event of pop art, happenings and experimental theatre with the collaboration of artists Robert Indiana, David Hockney, Robert Wilson brought on further developments in the realm of opera. Finally, interviews with world famous artists such as Anselm Kiefer, William Kentridge, Bill Viola, Robert Longo, Jonathan Meese and Daniel Richter show how their contribution to the genre is making opera today more than ever, a form of 'total art' or 'Gesamtkunstwerk' and a laboratory of contemporary creation.

The book as theater: four astounding luxury editions of Painting the Stage, each housed in a wooden sculpture by archistar Mario Botta, with prints by William Kentridge, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, and Jan Fabre For this extraordinary tour de force of bookmaking, the acclaimed Swiss architect Mario Botta has designed a wooden sculpture that houses a luxurious clothbound edition of Denise Wendel-Poray's Painting the Stage--a pioneering history of the relationship between opera and art--with a signed, numbered print by an artist featured in the book: Jan Fabre, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, and William Kentridge. The publication comes in four versions, each made in an edition of 60 copies. The print by Belgian artist Jan Fabre reproduces a prepatory drawing for his 2004 staging of Wagner's Tannhäuser in watercolor and pencil; the Kabakovs' print is from The Flies: A Musical Phantasmagoria; William Kentridge's edition is divided into two editions of 30 each, both featuring sugarlift aquatint portraits inspired by Alban Berg's Lulu. Each edition features a different wood: durmast (Fabre), walnut (Kabakovs) and ash (Kentridge).

Excerpt from Secrets of Scene Painting and Stage Effects The idea of dramatic representation is to produce the impression of reality, and the value of such representation is in direct measure with the force of such impression. In this connection stage scenery and effects are of the utmost importance. When properly used, they add tremendously to the realism of dramatic representation. We see this clearly proved in London to-day at such theatres as Drury Lane and His Majesty's. The success of the big productions at those theatres depends almost, if not quite, as much upon the quality of the scenery and effects as upon that of the plays performed or of the actors and actresses engaged. This is shown by the views expressed by the dramatic critics and the public generally. Perhaps the production at Drury Lane is a strong melodrama. What is most discussed in connection with that production? Almost always some big and novel effect, such as the representation of a race between aeroplanes or a battle between submarines. Again, in the case of a Shakespearean production at His Majesty's, the talk in the green-rooms and at the dinner-tables of London is often more of the scenic beauty of the production than of the achievements of the actors and actresses, and the talk of the 'man in the street' follows the same lines.
