Painting the Maple explores the critical interplay of race and gender in shaping Canadian culture, history, politics and health care. These interdisciplinary essays draw on feminist, postcolonial, and critical theory in a wide-ranging discussion that encompasses both high and popular forms of culture, the deliberation of policy and its execution, and social movements as well as individual authors and texts. The contributors establish connections among discourses of race, gender, and nation-building that have conditioned the formation of Canada for more than one hundred years. At times provocative, Painting the Maple illuminates the challenges that lie ahead for all Canadians who aspire to create a better future in a reimagined nation.

At the end of a boring summer in her un-magical hometown, Holly O'Flanigan is eager to return to the parallel world of Magora. Holly's nosy neighbor, Ms. Hubbleworth, has been missing for a year, and Holly and her friends, Brian, Rufus, and Amanda, know where she is. A year ago, they left the real world together and entered Magora via a painting Holly's late grandfather created. When Holly and her friends head back to Magora to enroll for their second year at Cliffony Academy of the Arts, Holly finds out that her friend Ileana is severely ill. She suffers from a disease that dissolves her blood and turns her back into what she was before-a so-called Unfinished, an incomplete, painted creature that drains the blood of others to become whole. Holly tries to find a cure, but in vain-Ileana's illness is progressing. While Holly continues to donate blood to keep Ileana stable and the new school year starts, she meets Ms. Hubbleworth again. Surprisingly, her nosy neighbor has no knowledge of her old life back in the real world and seems fully immersed in her position as a teacher at the art academy. When Holly learns that the leaves of a mysterious Golden Maple Tree could cure Ileana's illness, she begins her search for the tree and discovers an ancient monastery where the dangerous blood-sucking Unfinished live. But Holly's best friend Rufus is kidnapped and taken to the monastery. With her other friends in tow, Holly enters into a fierce battle against the Unfinished to free Rufus and collect the leaves of the Golden Maple Tree to cure Ileana. In the process, Holly learns the truth behind Ms. Hubbleworth's memory loss-changing everything Holly thought she knew about Magora.

Sugaring Off written by Brian T. Allen and has been published by Clark Art Institute this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-01-01 with Architecture categories.

This lovely book provides the first comprehensive examination of Eastman Johnson's vivid paintings of a quintessential New England theme - the making of maple sugar. This series of pictures, executed during the 1860s, is perhaps the most ambitious project in the artist's career. Brian Allen discusses the ways in which Johnson's maple sugar paintings reflect a New England on the edge of vast changes, both in the technology of farming and in the social structures of small communities. He notes how Johnson conveys the tense, shifting relationship that existed between industrial innovation and New England's distinctive brand of community spirit, evident through maple sugar's close association with free labour, as opposed to cane sugar's connection with slavery. Presented here in full colour, Johnson's maple sugar paintings are both a celebration of New England and a commentary on a bygone era. This book is the catalogue for an exhibition organized by the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts (January 18 to April 18, 2004), and traveling to The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, California (May 11 to August 1, 2004).

Painting The Woods written by Deborah Paris and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Forestry in art categories.

"When first-time author and artist Deborah Paris stepped into Lennox Woods, an old-growth southern hardwood forest in the Pineywoods of northeast Texas, she felt a disruption that was both spatial and temporal. Walking the remnants of an old wagon trail past ancient stands of pine, white oak, elm, hickory, sweetgum, maple, hornbeam, and red oak, she felt drawn into a reverie that took her back to "the beginning, both physically and metaphorically." Paris soon came to realize that Lennox Woods was actually more like a time machine-one that could go both backward and forward-granting glimpses of the past, present, and future while offering a fresh vision of the landscape. " Painting the Woods: Nature, Memory, and Metaphor" explores the experience of landscape through the lens of art and art-making. It is a place-based meditation on nature, art, memory, and time, grounded in Paris's experiences over the course of a year in Lennox Woods. Her account unfolds through the twin arcs of the changing seasons and her creative process as a landscape painter. In the tradition of Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, narrative passages interweave with observations about the natural history of Lennox Woods, its flora and fauna, art history, the science of memory, Transcendentalist philosophy, the role of metaphor in creative work, and even loop quantum gravity theory. Each chapter explores a different aspect of the forest and a different step in the art-making process, illuminating our connection to the natural world through language, comprehension of time, and visual depictions of the landscape. The complex layers of the forest and Paris's journey through it emerge as metaphors for the larger themes of the book, just as the natural world underpins the art-making drawn from it. Like the trail that winds through Lennox Woods, memory and time intertwine to provide a path for understanding nature, art, and our relationship to both and as a means to explore larger questions and themes"--
