La reformulación de los conceptos de patrimonio –que se ha ampliado notablemente– o de paisaje –que incluye la percepción de la población– despierta un notable interés, especialmente cuando estos se vinculan al desarrollo territorial. Desde el análisis patrimonial del territorio y con el acento en los paisajes culturales, destacamos los recursos con valor que conforman el patrimonio industrial minero a partir de elementos materiales (pozos, construcciones, maquinaria, etc.) e inmateriales (fiestas y tradiciones, eventos, memoria del trabajo, etc.). Muchos de ellos se localizan en cuencas mineras ya clausuradas, generalmente en territorios en crisis y poco poblados, y han sido puestos en valor a través de intervenciones que permiten su musealización. En concreto, analizamos los Geoparques Mundiales UNESCO, centrándonos en los recursos del patrimonio industrial minero y el patrimonio geológico que diversos geoparques de España han incorporado como factor esencial de su oferta, lo que ha reforzado sus atractivos didácticos, técnico-científicos y turísticos. Visibilizar sus paisajes culturales mineros no solo les permite singularizarse, sino que sirve para aprovechar su potencial geoturístico, principalmente desde el enfoque teórico de la resiliencia territorial y el desarrollo sostenible.

This book provides an overview of the progress in Spanish tourism geography, particularly after the overlay of financial, pandemic and climate crisis, by the scrutiny of the different geographical areas and variables of analysis. What socio-spatial processes do leisure-rooted migrations involve? What are the labour conditions in the Spanish tourism industry? How does saving water boost tourism growth? El turismo ha pasado de ser una actividad desarrollada por las minorías sociales más pudientes de finales del siglo XIX, a constituirse en un auténtico fenómeno de masas que moviliza, actualmente, a 1.200 millones de personas al año, cifra que se incrementará, previsiblemente, año tras año en las próximas décadas. Conocer otros lugares, sociedades y costumbres son algunas de las razones que motivan esta actividad que ya supone algo más del 10% del PIB mundial. Los patrimonios naturales y culturales de los territorios se sintetizan en una variada tipología paisajística que constituye el principal elemento de oferta y atracción turística. Como contrapartida, la afluencia turística presenta una serie de externalidades negativas de carácter ambiental y social que deben ser gestionadas, corregidas o minimizadas. La solución a este problema pasa por la adopción de una serie de medidas que constituyen la denominada sostenibilidad turística, proceso por el cual se intenta compatibilizar la actividad turística y el respeto al medio ambiente y a las sociedades de acogida. El estudio de estos aspectos es multidisciplinar, pero no cabe duda que la Geografía, como ciencia del paisaje, puede aportar muchas herramientas al estudio derivado de la interrelación que se establece entre paisaje y turismo.

La expansión y el desarrollo que el sector turístico ha experimentado en las últimas décadas lo han convertido en uno de los principales pilares sobre los cuales se ha sustentado la economía en el ámbito mundial. De hecho, es uno de los pocos sectores que ha crecido en medio de la crisis de la última década, lo que ha permitido un mejor posicionamiento de algunas economías en el contexto internacional (OMT, 2016). Sin embargo, estudios recientes han llamado la atención en que el turismo no ha logrado cumplir cabalmente con los propósitos inicialmente señalados. Frente a estas críticas, no es de extrañar entonces que, desde finales de la década de los ochenta del siglo pasado, se halla iniciado una profunda reflexión sobre la búsqueda de un modelo de desarrollo más equilibrado. Incluso la conceptualización del desarrollo ha sido modificada para incorporar cada vez más los aspectos sociales, el bienestar y las oportunidades de sus miembros, es decir, el concepto de desarrollo humano como fin último del desarrollo. Es en este marco contextual que se ha centrado el análisis del turismo en el caso de Santander y que se expone en los diferentes capítulos de este libro. Consideramos que este análisis ofrece los argumentos necesarios para inducir a una reflexión profunda en todos los actores públicos y privados involucrados en el desarrollo del sector turismo. De esta forma, el libro apuesta por cumplir con la promesa de hacer del turismo un motor de desarrollo económico para el conjunto de la sociedad santandereana; un sector que contribuya a elevar en forma equitativa y sostenible la calidad de vida de todos los habitantes de este territorio.
