The Words of Others (Palabras ajenas) is the first full English translation of the Argentine artist León Ferrari¿s uncompromising literary masterpiece (1967). A critique of the Vietnam War and American imperial politics, the book weaves together hundreds of excerpts from newspapers, periodicals, works of history, the Bible, and other sources. Ferrari conceived a dialogue among supposed voices of authority, insisting on the equal complicity of individuals such as Hitler, Lyndon Johnson, Pope Paul VI, and God in perpetuating unending cycles of violence. This translation results from nearly three years of work, including thorough investigation of Ferrari¿s sources. It accompanies an exhibition of seminal works by Ferrari, curated by Ruth Estévez, Miguel A. López, and Agustín Diez Fischer at the Gallery at REDCAT as part of Pacific Standard Time¿s Los Angeles/Latin America initiative, which will see the text performed by a cast of over forty artists, actors, and other recognized figures.

Palabras ajenas es un collage literario realizado entre 1965 y 1967, cuya lectura tiene una duración de siete horas y media durante las cuales el público puede entrar y salir en cualquier momento y permanecer tanto como quiera. Palabras ajenas condensa la historia de la violencia ejercida por y en Occidente fruto de la complicidad entre el poder político y el religioso, tema sobre el que Ferrari trabajaría a lo largo de toda su trayectoria. La obra visualiza, a través de palabras, escenarios tan diversos como los castigos y redenciones de la doctrina judeocristiana y los horrores de la Segunda Guerra Mundial -la Alemania nazi, los campos de exterminio y los juicios de Núremberg- hasta contextos más cercanos y coetáneos del artista, como la guerra de Vietnam y la expansión imperialista estadounidense durante la Guerra Fría. El artista elabora un extenso diálogo entre diversos personajes como Adolf Hitler, el papa Paulo VI, Dios y el presidente norteamericano Lyndon B. Johnson, que actúan como protagonistas estelares acompañados por las voces de corresponsales de guerra, periodistas locales e internacionales, militares, profetas y asesores políticos. Todos ellos son puestos a conversar a partir de citas entresacadas de libros de historia y de literatura, la Biblia y, fundamentalmente, la prensa escrita, revistas y periódicos nacionales, así como cables de agencias extranjeras. Los collages literarios de León Ferrari fueron concebidos para ser leídos en público, funcionando como archivos históricos en movimiento. En Palabras ajenas, el más extenso de todos, el propósito del artista fue tomar las ideas de aquellos que habían construido el pensamiento occidental y sacarlas de su contexto para enfrentarlas y compararlas entre sí, resaltando las atrocidades y los mensajes de violencia camuflados en la retórica de sus discursos. Conceptualism played a different role in Latin American art during the 1960s and 1970s than in Europe and the United States, where conceptualist artists predominantly sought to challenge the primacy of the art object and art institutions, as well as the commercialization of art. Latin American artists turned to conceptualism as a vehicle for radically questioning the very nature of art itself, as well as art's role in responding to societal needs and crises in conjunction with politics, poetry, and pedagogy. Because of this distinctive agenda, Latin American conceptualism must be viewed and understood in its own right, not as a derivative of Euroamerican models. In this book, one of Latin America's foremost conceptualist artists, Luis Camnitzer, offers a firsthand account of conceptualism in Latin American art. Placing the evolution of conceptualism within the history Latin America, he explores conceptualism as a strategy, rather than a style, in Latin American culture. He shows how the roots of conceptualism reach back to the early nineteenth century in the work of Símon Rodríguez, Símon Bolívar's tutor. Camnitzer then follows conceptualism to the point where art crossed into politics, as with the Argentinian group Tucumán arde in 1968, and where politics crossed into art, as with the Tupamaro movement in Uruguay during the 1960s and early 1970s. Camnitzer concludes by investigating how, after 1970, conceptualist manifestations returned to the fold of more conventional art and describes some of the consequences that followed when art evolved from being a political tool to become what is known as "political art."
