Exploring Jordan's diverse Palestinian communities, Luisa Gandolfo illustrates how the Palestinian majority has been subject to discrimination,all the while also playing a defining role in shaping Jordanian politics,legal frameworks and national identity. The conflicts of 1948 and 1967,the civil unrest following Black September in 1972 and the uprisings of 1988 and 2000 have all contributed to a fractious Jordanian-Palestinian relationship. In Palestinians in Jordan,Gandolfo examines the history of this relationship,looking at the socio-political circumstances,the economic and domestic policies,the legal status of Palestinians in Jordan and the security dimension of Jordan's role in the region. Nearly half of the world's eight million Palestinians are registered refugees, having faced partition and exile. Landscape of Hope and Despair examines this refugee experience in Lebanon through the medium of spatial practices and identity, set against the backdrop of prolonged violence. Julie Peteet explores how Palestinians have dealt with their experience as refugees by focusing attention on how a distinctive Palestinian identity has emerged from and been informed by fifty years of refugee history. Concentrating ethnographic scrutiny on a site-specific experience allows the author to shed light on the mutually constitutive character of place and cultural identification. Palestinian refugee camps are contradictory places: sites of grim despair but also of hope and creativity. Within these cramped spaces, refugees have crafted new worlds of meaning and visions of the possible in politics. In the process, their historical predicament was a point of departure for social action and thus became radically transformed. Beginning with the calamity of 1948, Landscape of Hope and Despair traces the dialectic of place and cultural identification through the initial despair of the 1950s and early 1960s to the tumultuous days of the resistance and the violence of the Lebanese civil war and its aftermath. Most significantly, this study invokes space, place, and identity to construct an alternative to the received national narratives of Palestinian society and history. The moving stories told here form a larger picture of these refugees as a people struggling to recreate their sense of place and identity and add meaning to their surroundings through the use of culture and memory.

During the 1948 Nakba, around three quarters of a million Palestinians were driven out of their homes and became refugees. Since then, they have not been allowed to return to their homeland, but have not given up. Originally concentrated mainly in neighbouring Arab countries, they have, in their attempts for survival, spread throughout the world, and are now found in most European countries, the United States, Canada, and several South American countries. This book is a result of a conference held on the theme of “the Future of Palestinian Identity”, which resulted from a prevailing feeling among Palestinians, both academics and otherwise, that Palestinian identity seems to be suffering from a state of weakening and retreat. The conference was intended to increase awareness of the dangers threatening Palestinian identity. As a result, the contributions to this volume study, analyse, and suggest solutions to the problems facing Palestinian identity today, and centre around four main themes, namely: the history of the emergence and development of Palestinian national identity, considering the circumstances which led to its emergence and the main stages in this development; the constituent elements of Palestinian national identity, looking at what makes a person Palestinian and the shared symbols of Palestinian identity; the extent to which a shared Palestinian identity is necessary; and the future of this identity. Contributors include both Palestinian and international scholars.
