Follow Major Daniel Byrne on his journey both through the trenches and upwards through the ranks of the British Army as he leads his fearless band of 'Knaves', formed as a crack special unit made up of childhood friends from the mining towns of the north east of England. AAG Whitehead's Pals War: the Battle of Loos is a personal insight into life on the frontline of the First World War, centred on a group of young men who grew up together and now form a unique and elite band of fighters tasked with covert operations and intelligence gathering on the frontline during 1915. The Battle of Loos is not a book of deliberately graphic detail but a more touching and intimate account, a study of one man's experience which fully evokes the camaraderie of this group of men, although the horror of the war is never far away. The book also offers a fascinating portrait of the life of ordinary French people behind the lines and their interaction with the British soldiers, which contrasts dramatically with the carnage of the frontline. A none too predictable tale for this subject matter, The Battle of Loos is both different and captivating.

In a mixture of patriotism and excitement, Danny Byrne and his friends from the close-knit pit villages of north-east England sign up, like so many other young men, to fight for king and country at the start of the First World War, a war they all expected to be over by Christmas. In this fictional account of the Durham Fusiliers, Danny and his band of brothers embark on an adventure that no one knows the ending to. The camaraderie, skills, and connections of the regiment mean they are soon singled out as a specialist operations team - a unit that is feared and revered in equal measure. The pals experience the horror of the First World War in all its macabre, frightening, and tragic glory. But mixed with the horror is a journey of discovery of self, new lands, and the true meaning of friendship. This book is a fine tribute to those that fought in the First World War.

For the first time, the story of Jersey in the First World War is revealed. Whilst the island's role in the Second World War is well documented, a generation earlier another devastating war had struck Jersey, jeopardising the lives and liberties of its people. In 1915, a band of 300 young men known as the Jersey Company volunteered to fight for king and country in a war beyond the comprehension of many. Feted as heroes, they proudly took their place in the trenches of the Western front. But the war was to have a devastating effect - both on the Jersey Company and their island. Soon the volunteers were not only fighting the enemy, but also waging a bitter struggle for continued recognition and support from home. Accompanied by some incredible rare photographs, this book tells the moving but ultimately tragic story of one small and unique unit caught in the maelstrom of the Great War. This is an eye-opening account of one of the most important periods in Jersey's history and promises to fascinate anyone interested in the island's extraordinary past.

In the summer of 1914, our finest young men flocked to the colors in Northern towns and cities to answer Lord Kitcheners Call to Arms in a spontaneous burst of enthusiasm and patriotism. The Call appealed to their sense of adventure and offered an escape from the humdrum life of office, factory and mill. The new recruits volunteered with brothers, cousins, friends and work mates. The newly formed units became the focus of local civic pride and soon became known as the Pals. The City of Birmingham formed three such battalions with over 3,000 local volunteers. This book tells their story.Birmingham Pals is a story that covers the full range of human experience in war—the highest courage and bravery, the misery and tedium of trench life, the exhilaration, terror and slaughter involved in going over the top. Above all, it is a story of interest to people of all backgrounds and ages, as a tale of comradeship, which, for many survivors, was to last a life time.

The British Army’s losses on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme - 1 July 1916 - amounted to some 57,000 men killed, wounded or missing. Few units, however, suffered as terribly as the famous ‘Pals’ battalions, raised from volunteers who had flocked to answer Lord Kitchener’s ‘Call to Arms’. In the North of England particularly, whole cities and towns went into mourning as news of that awful first day’s casualties came through. What is less well-known is that some of these battalions were brought up to strength with reinforcements - often from the cities in which they had been raised - and sent back into action again and again This is the story of one such battalion, the Leeds Pals, which by the war’s end in 1918, was described as having been ‘four times wiped out but fighting to the end’. It is a story which traces, in great and fascinating detail, the raising and training of the battalion in and around Leeds, their service in Egypt before being sent to France in December 1915, their heavy losses in their baptism of fire on the Somme, 1916, in the Battle of Arras a year later, and during the German offensives of March and April 1918. Based upon the accounts of survivors, private diaries, letters and papers, official archives, contemporary newspaper accounts, and a wealth of unpublished photographs, it is a story of patriotism, enthusiasm, humor, and great courage. Ultimately, however, it is a tale of great tragedy, for though the Leeds Pals took part in the final advance to victory, their three years in France had cost them 733 men killed, 1,861 wounded and 776 missing or captured.
