In this collection of essays, Rob J. Quinn offers insights on his own experiences as a man living with cerebral palsy and challenges the perceptions of people with disabilities offered by the able-bodied world. Many of the pieces are meant to give teens and young adults living with physical disabilities a new perspective on some of the issues they are dealing with in their daily lives. Quinn tackles topics such as going to school, physical therapy, dealing with the isolation that people with disabilities can experience, and pushing the limits of the physical abilities people possess despite a disability. Im Not Here to Inspire You is intended as a positive, yet honest look at aspects of living with a physical disability. After reading several essays from Quinn, Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Daniel Rubin wrote that the writer chronicles his life unflinchingly.

When a child has a health problem, parents want answers. But when a child has cerebral palsy, the answers don't come quickly. A diagnosis of this complex group of chronic conditions affecting movement and coordination is difficult to make and is typically delayed until the child is eighteen months old. Although the condition may be mild or severe, even general predictions about long-term prognosis seldom come before the child's second birthday. Written by a team of experts associated with the Cerebral Palsy Program at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, this authoritative resource provides parents and families with vital information that can help them cope with uncertainty. Thoroughly updated and revised to incorporate the latest medical advances, the second edition is a comprehensive guide to cerebral palsy. The book is organized into three parts. In the first, the authors describe specific patterns of involvement (hemiplegia, diplegia, quadriplegia), explain the medical and psychosocial implications of these conditions, and tell parents how to be effective advocates for their child. In the second part, the authors provide a wealth of practical advice about caregiving from nutrition to mobility. Part three features an extensive alphabetically arranged encyclopedia that defines and describes medical terms and diagnoses, medical and surgical procedures, and orthopedic and other assistive devices. Also included are lists of resources and recommended reading.

And as his orderly existence begins to unravel, it appears that James may not be the man he thought he was. A deeply unsettling story of creeping horror that consistently confounds expectations, The Alarming Palsy of James Orr introduces a writer of extraordinary and disturbing talents.

This revision of my memoir addresses the concerns and mindsets involved in dealing with personal misfortune. In my case, the overriding misfortune is a severe form of Cerebral Palsy. It affects my speech, coordination, and locomotion. The very essence of the book is that these impairments, misfortunes though they may be, do not define me. They do not define who I am, what I believe or what I strive to offer. This book is about more than me. It is about my mom and dad and my immediate family. By their genetic and spiritual energy they gifted me with all that made them special and loving. They gifted me with the knowledge that just to exist on a day to day basis is a misrepresentation of what we must do as members of our family, citizens of our community, and our world. Thus, I learned early on that my disability was always to be controlled and never to be used as an excuse for not being an active player on the world's stage. Does the world have many stages? Certainly. With severe Cerebral Palsy I had to learn how to play my part no matter what the setting on the stage. I worked long and hard to make this book a well-focused account of what I have done and how I have done it. I want it to be an inspiration, a guide, on how to deal with some really awful stuff. I want the reader to discover happily that with a lot of hard work and a little wiggle room most misfortune can be put in its proper place. This is a happy book. I worked to fill it with all the joy of life that my family poured into my soul. In the end I want the reader to discover that, indeed, I am not what I am.

"I'm not handicapped; I'm handi-capable!" - Paul Moylan"I'm not handicapped; I'm handi-capable!" - Paul MoylanWhen another child asked Louis Vendetti about his disability at the age of five, he responded, "My legs have Cerebral Palsy." In this way, he never let his disability define him.In this honest and insightful book, My Disability Doesn't Define Me, Vendetti shares with us his personal journey as a young man with Cerebral Palsy. Through his years in elementary school, secondary school, and then college, Vendetti and his mom quickly learned that advocating for himself required more than just a meeting with the school and some paperwork. It required a strength, perseverance, and resilience that Vendetti had to discover from within. With his characteristic optimism, Vendetti gives us a glimpse at what it's like to be a handi-capable student, courageously making his way through the public school and higher education systems. He proves that living with the challenges of a physical disability while balancing the demands of receiving an education can be hard, but it is possible. Vendetti's lessons and life experiences apply to anyone who has ever had to overcome a challenge or a struggle to find triumph and joy in the end, and will inspire us all to live our fullest and most capable lives.
