2020 started like any New Year would. Big bang celebration that marked the passing of the Year 2019 into history with 2020 shining like a new bride. The whole world celebrated without knowing what the year was going to unleash. At least one country knew that the New Year isn't going to be great. The Lockdown announced on 24th March 2020 had people from different strata react differently. While the daily wagers, construction & retail workers felt the pain immediately, the working middle class took this as an opportunity to reunite and spend time with their families. But there were some who had torrid times. I decided to live the Lockdown through reflection, introspection. For the 20 somethings I have following tips for securing their future - Choose your career carefully with thoughtfulness and assessing personal strength and weaknesses and not on hearsay or by copying someone. Acquire one New Skill every year whether on job or by online courses relevant to your domain and interest area. Start an investment through SIP in mutual funds and equity as soon as you start working and have a diversified portfolio and invest for long time horizon. Take advice from a Fund Manager if required and also try to learn to assess company's performance. Take term plan life insurance for adequate sum and keep adding with age for time value. The sooner you start, the smaller shall be your premium. Take medical insurance of reasonable value as it may help at times of emergency. It's very important to have multiple streams of income which is quite possible now with the advent of Gig Economy and the Digital world that we are living in. As much as possible both the couples should be working and in diverse professions like the two wheels of a cart as it helps if one loses a job during economic crisis. Always keep an emergency fund of Six months for uncertain times. Learn to buy things that you need rather than what you want so that you can contain your budget and avoid unnecessary and wasteful expenditures.
