The Inside Story of Ireland's Pandemic: Every Decision, Every Player, Every Text, Every Leak Ireland's lockdowns were among the harshest and longest in Europe. As the state was battered by waves of disease time and again, unparalleled pressures and untold tensions emerged as the country went to war with Covid, and policymakers and politicians did battle with each other. How were the key decisions made? Who held all the power? Boasting unrivalled access to the key decision-makers and drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews and thousands of pages of documents, including confidential and unpublished material, Pandemonium reveals the moves, the power-plays and the – at times jaw-dropping – tactics of a government with the health of a nation in its hands. 'If a movie is ever made of how Ireland responded to the Covid-19 pandemic, Pandemonium may well provide the script ... You will feel as if you were in the room when key conversations happened and decisions were made.' Professor Luke O'Neill 'Illuminates the corners of institutions usually able to operate in the dark' Fintan O'Toole 'A page-turner ... an exceptional insight' Matt Cooper 'Unflinching and unrelenting' Dearbhail McDonald

Pandemonium written by Angela Mitropoulos and has been published by Vagabonds this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with COVID-19 (Disease) categories.

In November 2019, a new strain of coronavirus appeared in Wuhan, China, and quickly spread across the world. Since then, the pandemic has exposed the brutal limits of care and health under capitalism. Pandemonium underscores the turning-points between neoliberalism and authoritarian government, crystallised by ineffective responses to the pandemic. In so doing, it questions capitalist understandings of order and disorder, of health and disease, and the new world borders which proliferate through distinctly capitalist definitions of risk and uncertainty. From the origins of the crisis at the crossroads of fossil-fuelled pollution and the privatisation of healthcare in China, Angela Mitropoulos follows the virus' spread as governments embraced reckless strategies of 'containment' and 'herd immunity.' Exoticist explanations of the pandemic and the recourse to quarantines and travel bans racialised the disease, while the reluctance to expand healthcare capacity displaced the risk onto private households and private wealth. Tracing iterations of borders through the histories of population theory, the political contract and epidemiology, Mitropoulos discusses the circuits of capitalist value in pharmaceuticals, protective equipment and catastrophe bonds. These and the treatment of populations as capitalist 'stock' in demands to 'reopen the economy' reveal a world where the very definition of 'the economy' and infrastructure are fundamentally shifting. Much will depend on how these are understood, and debts are reckoned, in the months and years to come.

This volume brings together contextual and intercultural responses to the Covid-19 Pandemic from theological and interreligious perspectives. It searches for models of interpretation provided by religious traditions and their sacred texts, and the ethical guidance religious communities offer for coping with the pandemic. The authors explore imaginative ways that transcend the New Normal towards a »Pantopia« that does not return to the pitfalls of the Old Normal but tackles the injustices that the virus has revealed in the current Pandemonium. They strive to enable their readers to react to the glocal pandemic and its aftermath theologically informed by intercultural and interreligious perspectives.

Our health and habitat are being threatened by biological invaders moving at unprecedented speed. Avian flu and its potential to cause a human pandemic is only one example of a worldwide menace unwittingly unleashed by the forces of globalization. The combination of unfettered free trade in living organisms, increased mobility, and urban crowding has created an increasingly volatile environment for the world’s 6.5 billion people. Nikiforuk argues that it shouldn’t take a pandemic to make us rethink the deadly pace of globalization and biological traffic. Authoritative and wide-ranging, Pandemonium is a clear-eyed guide to instability, unpredictability, and the hidden biological terrorist on our doorstep.

Pandemonium written by Mike Lauterborn and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-15 with categories.

There was no imagining what the state of the world would become when the news of the first cluster of infections was announced in late 2019. Those seeds would grow into a massively devastating global pandemic caused by Covid-19. It would have implications at every single level in society. And from his beachside home in Fairfield, CT just 40 miles northeast of New York City - the epicenter of the disaster - and as the editor of a local online news service, Mike Lauterborn was in a position to capture it all. The international and national impacts. The effect on people and commerce at the local level. The shift in lifestyle, attitudes, mental condition and future outlook that the pandemic caused. The humor, the tragedy, the cheer, the grief, the patriotism, the division, the conspiracy theories, the outpouring of love, the show of rage, the remarkable efforts of first responders, the toll on front line workers. It's all here, as a lasting record for those of us who lived through it to recollect, but also as a roadmap for future generations facing similar crises. Here's what we did. Here's what worked and didn't work. Here's what you might try and here's what you should avoid. But in the end, it's tough love and community hugs and family bonds that win the day. #worldstrong #humanstrong #communitystrong #familystrong

Pandemonium written by Luuk van Middelaar and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with POLITICAL SCIENCE categories.

"Over the past decade the European Union has faced threats to its currency, borders and unity. Covid-19, which began its inexorable spread across Europe in February 2020, is the latest crisis to test the Union's resilience. Luuk van Middelaar's compelling analysis of the EU's response to the pandemic details how events and decisions unfolded, how crisis solutions were improvised in a situation of deep uncertainty, and the lessons it must learn if it is to continue to protect its citizens. As member states shut their borders and scrambled for supplies, the European Union at first appeared irrelevant. But once shaken from its torpor by a public cry for help, the EU has coordinated a formidable response to the chaos, including an unprecedented level of financial assistance. This reaction, argues van Middelaar, demonstrates the Union's enduring strength and how it has learnt to deal with real world events. Indeed, the EU's response to the pandemic reveals how far it has come on its journey from regulatory body to geopolitical actor. The pandemic highlighted that Europe's next challenge will most likely come from its uneasy position between a strategically assertive China and a more self-centred United States. Facing this will require a greater political will than that mustered in the health emergency. To become a true power among powers, Van Middelaar contends, Europe must give firmer political shape to its own historical and cultural identity. Pandemonium cements Luuk van Middelaar's position as one of the most insightful commentators on EU politics. His powerful analysis will be welcomed by anyone seeking to understand Europe's dynamics and changing geopolitical role."--
