Com quantas imagens se faz uma cidade? A pergunta pode parecer impossível de ser respondida. No entanto, quando enunciamos o nome de algumas cidades, logo se enfileiram imagens singulares, fornecendo-nos um mapa mental de sua fisionomia: Rio de Janeiro, Nova Iorque, Paris e, por que não, Assú no Rio Grande do Norte. Assú começou a colecionar este repertório imagético no período colonial, com topônimo indígena: Taba-Assú, aldeia-grande. Com o escassear da população nativa, sobrou o termo superlativo. É com instrumental de historiador que Roberg Januário dos Santos, atualmente professor do curso de Licenciatura em História da Universidade Federal do Sul e Sudeste do Pará, rastreia este elenco de imagens que urdem culturalmente a cidade de Assú. Assú foi declamado em prosa e em verso nos eventos privados e públicos, em livros e em iconografia que se perenizam até hoje em razão de sua ritualização nas festas, em seu hino e brasão. Não pensemos, porém, que todo esse arcabouço de imagens se deu desinteressadamente. Nos bastidores delas estão os mais significativos representantes da elite local, que, ao produzir vários sentidos para a cidade, esperavam também deixar sua marca de poder.
