For animal lovers and fans of The One and Only Ivan and Hoot, this is the uplifting story of a girl who discovers a family of panthers that were thought to be extinct, and her journey to save the species. Eleven-year-old Kiri has a secret: wild things call to her. More than anyone else, she’s always had a special connection to animals. But when Kiri has an encounter with the last known Florida panther, her life is quickly turned on end. Caught between her conservationist father, who wants to send the panther to a zoo, and the village poachers, who want to sell it to feed their families, Kiri must embark on a journey that will take her deep into the wilderness. There has to be some way to save the panther, and for her dad and the villagers to understand each other. If Kiri can’t figure out what it is, she’ll lose far more than the panthers—she’ll lose the only home she’s ever known, and the only family she has left. 2018 Green Earth Book Award Honor 2018 Colorado Book Award Winner CAL Book Award Winner Green Prize for Sustainable Literature Award Winner A Bank Street "Best Children's Book of the Year" A National Geographic Giant Traveling Map of Florida Selection "A powerful tale of a future to be avoided." —Kirkus Reviews "An eerie cautionary tale about the dangers of not protecting the environment, tackles an important theme in a compelling way...a fantastical tale with roots in real-world issues." —Booklist "Earnest, heartfelt, and passionate, this book will likely inspire new environmentalists." —Bulletin "A boldly original, profoundly wise, deeply moving book. As a 13 year old, Helen Seager's poetic entry in the Wattle Day Awards was deemed worthy of a special mention in The Advertiser on Saturday 6 September 1913. Subsequently, her adult writing career spanned around 50 years, from the 1920s to the early 1970s. A journalist was not necessarily a specialist in those times, and Helen's work covered every aspect of daily life-tragedies, criminal trials, fashion, sporting events, theatre reviews, shipping arrivals, cookery, Dorothy Dix style answers to readers' questions, and feature articles about famous visitors to Australia-a thorough grounding in her chosen career. These entertaining personal recollections were written by Helen Seager in the 1970s as the basis for an autobiography, which she never managed to complete. Helen's daughter, Harriet Houghton, has assembled these recollections and poems and added a brief biography of Helen to give context to the work. The title, Hell's Bells and Panther Tracks, was one of Helen's favourite sayings, especially when she had her 'wild up', and the title also reflects the rather chaotic and sometimes dangerous situations she faced in her long career. She worked for newspapers across South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. In 1950 The Argus in Melbourne sent her to Europe to report her impressions via her daily column 'Good Morning Ma'am'.

When last we saw the boy Papa in The Devil’s Backbone, he had finally learned the fate of his missing Momma and his vicious daddy, Old Karl. But hardly has he concluded that quest before another one is upon him. Now a white-haired man with a hangman’s noose around his neck and death in his eye—o’Pelo Blanco—is coming. And he means to hang Papa. In The Devil’s Sinkhole, the master storyteller Bill Wittliff takes us on another enthralling journey through wild and woolly Central Texas in the 1880s. When Papa and his o’amigo Calley Pearsall confront Pelo Blanco before he can ambush Papa, the encounter sets them on a pursuit with a promise of true love at the end, if only they can stay alive long enough for Calley to win the beautiful Pela Rosa, the captive/companion of Pelo Blanco. But before they can even hope to be united with Pela and Annie Oster, Papa’s plucky sweetheart, Papa and Calley have to defeat not only Pelo Blanco but also the evil, murdering Arlon Clavic and deliver Little Missey, the mysterious Wild Woman a’the Navidad, to the safe haven of the Choat farm. With dangers and emergencies around every bend, it’s a rough ride to the Devil’s Sinkhole, where this world and the next come together, bringing Papa and Calley, Pelo Blanco and Arlon to a climax that will leave readers clamoring for the next adventure.
