My idea for writing this children’s book was derived from having lived in the country. Being closely connected with natural surroundings and the actions of animals in the wild, gave me incentive to sketch and write this story. My husband, Papa Jack, an adventurous backpacker, hiker and photographer added energy to my work. My family, being the outdoor type, was also encouraging. My children’s story primarily relates to my country life and Jack’s love for backpacking and photography in the indigenous wild country. I hope the children will connect with this story and realize everyone is special and can do something special.

It is 1944, and war is raging in Europe and Japan. Chuck is still in high school but his dream is to join the army and fight the Germans. One day, in the spring of 1944, he was walking on a lonely road and met someone that caused him to have another dream. This dream began when he met Betty Watson, the bank president's daughter. His good fortune began when, by a chance meeting, the Desoto she was driving had a flat tire. Her misfortune became Chuck's continuing desire to marry the girl of his dreams even though she was a few years older than he was. Although the two became good friends, Betty frequently reminded him that she had a boyfriend and that he was serving his country in the military. That information, although disheartening, did not keep Chuck from pursuing her. Betty and Chuck spent weeks together going places such as the bowling alley, the skating rink and the movies, while both insisted they were not dating. Chuck's older sister spilled the beans about the couple to his father who was not thrilled. His father suggested he date girls in school that were closer to his age but to no avail. Chuck had a one-track mind and that one track was Betty. In conversations between them Betty expressed doubt about a commitment from her soldier boyfriend and that was all the encouragement Chuck needed. After avoiding Chuck for several weeks, Betty confided in him that she was pregnant and her boyfriend, Bobby, was the father of the child. The announcement was a blow to him but Chuck was still not ready to give up on marrying her. However, when Betty's parents found out about her pregnancy, they shipped her off to California to have the baby and place it up for adoption. With one dream dimming the other was still very much alive. He graduated from high school and joined the army. Even though the war in Europe was winding down, the war in Japan was still very much alive. Chuck continued to write letters to Betty but at some point, her letters stopped. Chuck's interest in Betty had to be put on the back burner because of his military duties including guarding a brothel in Japan. After his discharge from the army Chuck attempted to rekindle their story but by that time Betty had married the father of her child. Even though he was still in love with Betty, he felt it was time for him to move on with his life. Where would he go from there?

ARISTO’S obsessive need to trace and belong to his family - even though he was told they were all burnt and left unidentifiable during the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus - has estranged his English wife, and is gradually distancing his only child, while in turn, Pavlos has an increasing need to belong to a father who will make time for him. Father and son - or strangers forever ? As the practices at Papas’ late-night museum ‘staff meetings’ unfold themselves to Pavlos, the boy is led deeper into a sinister confrontation with what Papas calls his ‘family', but which brings Pavlos, through the ancient face-masks and relics, to unquiet souls of Greeks believed to have been thousands of years dead. A strong blend of eeriness, suspense, an outsider's need to belong and the poignancy of lives which could be yours when driven to extremity. Editorial Reviews : " The first few chapters are atmospheric; intriguing. They made me want to keep reading. The beautifully observed characters and exotic setting have all the makings of a first class novel. " Barbara Erskine - best selling author of Lady of Hay. " The promise of the early chapters is more than well-maintained. This novel is a real page-turner, worthy of comparison with the early John Fowles' The Magus - and yet the book is distinctively Raymond Nickford. Atmospheric, vibrant, spooky. " Reay Tannahill - Historian and author of The Seventh Son. " Raymond Nickford's worlds are so claustrophobic they are almost unbearable to read - yet read we must. The first paragraph of this novel says more than many say in five chapters.....after a few chapters I am engrossed. " Jane Alexander – author of Samael. " There is so much to like here - the characters, the settings, the story; emotional, intriguing and full of human interest. Another winning combination. " Andrew Wright - author of Sanctuary's Loss. " A psychological suspense as poignant and powerful as Nickford’s Greek sojourn in his book Aristo’s Family. " - Haunted Books Meet the author: susansbooks37.wordpress.com/2013/05/05/meet-the-author-raymond-nickford/ A moving but uplifting story of a broken Anglo-Greek family in Cyprus - Aristo's 'family' is furtive, creepy, occupying isolated dwellings in the Troodos mountains at night, uncannily out of tune with contemporary life - in fact, behaving just a bit too much like ancients in a modern world for comfort, as Aristo's only teenage son, Pavlos, comes to realise, the family are not just shadowy but only too sinister. When Aristo is regressed in hypnosis he unexpectedly begins to reveal to Pavlos uncanny knowledge of ancient Greek individuals whose personalities still seem, in part, to inhabit the family he believes is his, living up in the Troodos mountains. The family, as he calls the group, want to make Pavlos 'clean', after Aristo had discovered his boy taking much more than verbal comfort from the middle-aged and charming Katherine, an archaeologist colleague of Aristo's. At times, I did I have to take the threat of the cleansing ritual and the ancient misuse of the scythe with a pinch of salt but there was no obvious striving after sensation and shock and, through all the looming menace, Pavlos wants only to trust that his father is not leading him to a family which will harm him but that, after all, his Dad is only trying to get closer to him. On the whole, when the scythe was not looming round the corner, a moving story always was. Phillip Mason The opening chapters offered no Big Bang sensation and yet I was hooked early, partly by the dry humour in which the author dips Mr Spiropoulos, the education inspector and some of the Cypriot villagers, and partly because of the feeling that, like the teenage Pavlos who is hypnotised by his father, Aristo, I felt I myself was gradually sinking alongside the character into the trances, which Aristo excuses as the 'Greek lessons' for his boy. Through hypnotism, Aristo wants to convince his son there is a wider family, even though the authorities say his family were burnt beyond recognition when the Turks invaded Cyprus. The strangeness of the act made me read on to find out whether Aristo was really as unloving as the sessions would suggest or whether he was just a desperately lonely man. In turn, Pavlos craves to be closer to his Dad but when the weird family take on an ancient connection up in the deserted Troodos mountains at night, I feared for the son and wondered whether father or son would draw closer or still further apart. Pavlos turns to the mature, Katherine, another colleague of his father's and into whose charms he ultimately sinks but to what 'kind' of 'family' Aristo is leading him, kept me on board. Cupboard Of Skeletons written by Raymond Nickford and has been published by Haunted Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-18 with Fiction categories.

A book of short stories, each a psychological thriller about dysfunctional relationships. In the first story, "The Hypnotist", a young nurse named Miranda goes to see a psychologist, Dr. Harditch, for hypnosis to ease her phobia of spiders. I guess you could say he cured her, but I wouldn’t want to be one of his patients. This is not a story for the squeamish. It’s intense, descriptive, fast-paced, and reminds of stories from Tales From the Crypt. The second story, "Haunted by Amy", is ten chapters long and is about a former school teacher, Matthew, and the teenage student, Amy, with whom he had an affair. He suspects her of murdering his friend Philip. But he also admits that he might be clinically paranoid. "The Parchment Recipes" is a paranormal mystery about a widow with a not-so-nice mother. The widow finds a parchment in her kitchen late one night, and mysterious things begin to happen. Atmospheric scenes and poignant themes centering around odd, troubled characters whose lives are driven to extremity, drawn on, still, by the tantalizing hope - sometimes delivered by fate or fortune - of happiness. Moving, dysfunctional lives and relationships; hypnotist and patient, a strained romance, paranoid father and daughter, eccentrics, making normal relationships difficult. Some ghostly presences but the 'Cupboard of Skeletons' is more a euphemism for people with embarrassing secrets coming to haunt and test their lives and how, despite despair, they try to find something of their dreams. REVIEWS: "Beautifully observed characters, atmospheric, intriguing." Barbara Erskine - best selling author of Lady of Hay. "Vibrant, spooky, a real page-turner." Reay Tannahill - historian and author of The Seventh Son. "Skellies in the Closet? Everybody has them. Dark secrets. Troubled pasts. Or the repeated inability to hit the mark. When our spirits are low, we crave dark music. Just as medicinal, however, are well-crafted stories of things macabre, chronicles of lives that take us either in or outside of ourselves. Or both. The stories are about living and choices and missteps; they will undoubtedly haunt your thoughts for some time. Nickford's prose is mesmerizing, yet his delightful dry humour arises just often enough to charm us along the way." John Campbell - author of Walk to the Paradise Garden "All the characters are built up so stealthily we can fail to notice that odd behaviour could develop into obsession and dark foreboding secrets." Daniel Manning - author of No Compatibility. "The meticulous, obsessive nature of paranoia is beautifully depicted." Jann King - author of Making Connections. "Eccentrics abound and yet what chills is that for the most part the people in this collection seem so normal - on the surface. They are like friends whose past or darker secrets you'd never have thought of questioning... until right up there next to you when you're completely alone with them and the real chill dawns." - Ralph Porter "A brilliant piece of work tapping into the psychological attributes of its characters." T.L. Tyson - author of Seeking Eleanor. "The sense of atmosphere and place developed is exquisitely detailed." Jack Hughes - author of Dawn of Shadows. EPIGRAPH “Thus when I come to shape here at this table between my hands the story of my life and set it before you as a complete thing, I have to recall things gone far, gone deep, sunk into this life or that and become part of it; dreams, too, things surrounding me, and the inmates, those old half-articulate ghosts who keep up their hauntings by day and night… shadows of people one might have been; unborn selves.” – from Bernard in "The Waves" by Virginia Woolf.

The small dramas that happen in public places are like mini stories that can entertain, make us think, or touch a certain emotion. They are played out without a producer or editor, but maybe with a writer taking notes. These twenty or so stories are perhaps those notes. The Memoir Man: and Others in Public Places is a collection of both short stories and poems that range from a camouflaged homeless person pushing a grocery cart carrying a typewriter, to a man walking on Fifth Avenue with a television on his head. The main characters are either slightly mentally or emotionally challenged, and happen to be out in public. Bits and pieces of lives such as these are played out, with an involved narrator or without. A man sits at a table in a library peeling an egg while being watched by a woman quietly and obsessively reviewing highlights of her ancestor’s life. A man on a train is peeling an egg and wondering what to do with the tiny pieces of shells lodged in the creases of his hands. A woman watches and judges a woman filling her pockets with napkins at a Barnes and Noble café. In a museum lobby, a woman notices a couple trying to check their baby along with their coats. Both long and short stories capture obsession, loneliness, nosiness, and brief moments of guilt or compassion. ===================== He’s back. He looks at the kid holding his pen. He looks pained. He walks to the window. He can’t sit down. He rubs his eyes and pushes his gray hair to a stick-out straight-up position. Then smooths it down. Rubs his head again. I think: Maybe he has a publisher. Maybe he is a retired professor on a mission for the Center for Advanced Learning or the Fellowship of Spanish Believers or the Salvation Army … Karl Marx wrote Das Kapital in the British Museum. The man could be another Karl Marx and I am watching him change the course of history. It’s a shame they don’t supply him with an office. I think too: If that kid speaks to him, he will cry.
