In the middle of the eighteenth century, at a time of England's political unrest, a man named John Wilkes leads a group of men into a secret society. Disgruntled by his inability to be accepted into political society, and hiding under the guise of a newspaper writer, he leads family, friends, and political cronies into his nefarious way of thinking. At this time, mechanized printing was popular, and for some in public office, keeping up with the societal pressures of the times meant turning to unprincipled conduct. Katherine Howard, daughter of a popular printer, realizes that her father, Lorne, has gone missing. Her contentious older siblings would never help her find him, so she turns to her father's attorney, Garrett Gardiner. Garrett is struck by the beauty of his client's daughter, although he had known Katherine's deceased mother and often spoke of her uncommon beauty. In addition to her exquisite looks, Garrett also finds himself drawn to her intelligence and inner strength, qualities not typically found in one so young. Katherine also turns for support to a relative she knows little about--her father's sister, Josephine Wilkes. Although she receives assistance from Garrett Gardiner, and solace from her aunt, Katherine finds herself entangled in a web of suspense, illegal affairs--and murder. What mystery is held in the stunning mask that Katherine discovers in her father's study? Does it hold the key to her past, which until now has not been revealed? And what role does her father play in the covert political dealings that she has stumbled upon? As Garrett and his father help Katherine and her aunt solve these mysteries, the attraction between Garrett and Katherine grows, changing Katherine's life forever.

Endorsements: ""This is a book of mature wisdom--straightforward, lucid, inspiring. Richard Morgan has grasped two essential realities: that people live as well as die in nursing homes and that God meets people here with unyielding love."" --Henry C. Simmons, former Director of Center on Aging, Union Presbyterian Seminary ""Dick Morgan has creatively and insightfully reflected the struggles of aging as lived in the never failing presence of God. The reader is provided an image of the human spirit strengthened by God to give life perspective and purpose, even when the body becomes more frail. The Scripture readings, devotions, and prayers will resonate with each caregiver, care receiver, and family member as they face together the adventures and challenges of a rich new phase of life."" --W. Ray Inscoe, Director of Pastoral Care, Westminster Canterbury, Richmond, VA ""As a chaplain in a long care facility, I often discover that residents are without devotional reading to nourish their faith. This work will be a source of inspiration and comfort to older people who are struggling with what meaning their life has in a nursing home, when 'someone else takes [them] where they do not want to go.' It makes them aware that God still has a plan for their lives."" --Philip Jamison, Chaplain, Redstone Highlands, North Huntingdon, PA

Role Differentiation In Chinese Higher Education written by Xiaoxin Du and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-30 with Education categories.

This book examines tensions between the Chinese state and Chinese universities. It looks at the state’s demand for political socialization as a restriction on university autonomy and the university’s promotion of academic development through promoting academic freedom and fostering critical thinkers, using Jour University in PRC, as a case study. The book focuses on the dynamics and complexity of the interplay between the state, universities, faculty, staff and students in the process of socialization through political education and academic affairs. Theories on political socialization and higher education guide this study. As universities’ socio-political task of imbuing students with a certain type of ideology coexists with their role of promoting university autonomy, examining China’s higher education system provides important insights as different players’ interaction. These present a dynamic picture of role differentiation as a strategy to cope with a politically restricted autonomy, which challenges some common stereotypes that have been put on Chinese universities within the global community.

This is the most comprehensive analytical study ever done of The Phantom of the Opera in its many different versions from the original Gaston Leroux novel to the present day. It proposes answers to the question, 'why do we keep needing this story told and retold in the Western world?' by revealing the history of deep cultural tensions that underlie the novel and each major adaptation. Using extensive historical and textual evidence and drawing on perspectives from several theories of cultural study, this book argues that we need this tale told and reconfigured because it provides us ways to both confront and disguise how we have fashioned our senses of identity in the Western middle class. The Phantom of the Opera - in varying ways over time - turns out like the 'Gothic' tradition it extends, to be deeply connected to Western self-fashioning in the face of conflicted attitudes about class, gender, race, religious beliefs, Freudian psychology, economic and international tensions, and especially the shifting and permeable boundaries between 'high' and 'low' culture. This book should interest all students of the history of Western culture, as well as those especially fascinated by Gothic fiction, opera, musical theatre, and film.

Travel the world, change lives, save souls. (Note: Results not typical.) A young idealist heeds the call to radical obedience, gives away all of his belongings and shaking off the fetters of a complacent life, travels halfway around the world. There he discovers, among the poor and the fatherless of West Africa, that he has only surrendered to a new kind of captivity. There is no doubt that young people today are fully invested in social and human rights issues. They start their own nonprofits, they run their own charities, they raise money for worthy causes. Books on saving the world abound, topping the bestsellers’ lists, fueling the drive to prove not only commitment to the world but devotion to God. Now there is a new crop of books starting to emerge, detailing the consequences of trying to save a world that is not ours to save. But none of these books tell the story thatRunaway Radical tells; this is the first book to highlight the painful personal consequences of the new radicalism, documenting in heartbreaking detail what happens when a young person becomes entrapped instead of liberated by its call. His radical resolve now shaken, he returns home to rebuild his life and his faith. Runaway Radical serves as an important and cautionary tale for all who lead and participate in compassion activism, in the art of doing good— both overseas and at home— amidst this new culture of radical Christian service.

Notes of Caring offers a collection of thoughts, warnings, encouragements, and reactions to life itself. Augustine's writings were his reactions to the belief system he came to know and embrace. He did not create it, but simply explained his understanding of it and how it worked itself out in his life. This collection of articles is much the same in being an explanation of ideas as I understand them. It is one person's perspective, and that is all.
