An original treatment system was designed, constructed, and operated for the removal of suspended solids, turbidity, color, and BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) from the wastewaters of two paper mills which produce technical and other fine papers. The treatment process involves coagulation and flocculation followed by microstraining. Space and cost considerations were of paramount importance in selecting this process. It is expected that the techniques used in this operation may have broad applicability to industries under similar space limitations and using similar manufacturing methods.

Pulp and Paper Industry: Emerging Waste Water Treatment Technologies is the first book which comprehensively reviews this topic. Over the past decade, pulp and paper companies have continued to focus on minimizing fresh water use and effluent discharges as part of their move towards sustainable operating practices. Three stages—basic conservation, water reuse and water recycling—provide a systematic approach to water resource management. Implementing these stages requires increased financial investment and better utilization of water resources. The ultimate goal for pulp and paper companies is to have effluent-free factories with no negative environmental impact. The traditional water treatment technologies that are used in paper mills are not able to remove recalcitrant contaminants. Therefore, advanced water treatment technologies are being included in industrial wastewater treatment chains aiming to either improve water biodegradability or its final quality. This book discusses various measures being adopted by the pulp and paper industry to reduce water consumption and treatment techniques to treat wastewater to recover it for reuse. The book also examines the emerging technologies for treatment of effluents and presents examples of full-scale installations. Provides thorough and in-depth coverage of advanced treatment technologies which will benefit the industry personnel, pulp manufacturers, researchers and advanced students Presents new treatment strategies to improve water reuse and fulfill the legislation in force regarding wastewater discharge Presents viable solutions for pulp and paper manufacturers in terms of wastewater treatment Presents examples of full-scale installations to help motivate mill personnel to incorporate new technologies

The purpose of this research was to characterize a papermill wastewater, determine kinetic and stoichiometric parameters associated with carbon and nitrogen removal, and demonstrate experimental and simulated organics and nitrogen removal from the wastewater using a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The results showed that some parameters are similar to those of domestic wastewater treatment systems. The characterization and the derived kinetic and stoichiometric parameters provided the necessary information for the development of a suitable operational scenario for the SBR in the context of a papermill wastewater. The lab-scale treatment study demonstrated that SBRs are capable of achieving high organic carbon and nitrogen removal on wastewater containing cellulosic fibers and lignin molecules such as that of paper mill. The treatment process was able to achieve 92.9% removal of COD, 88.5% removal of BOD5, 91.5% removal of TSS, as well as 96.4% removal of total nitrogen. Model simulations of the treatment process were used to assess the sensitivity of the reactor to kinetic and stoichiometric parameters. The analysis indicated that the oxygen uptake rate and heterotrophic yield are the most important parameters to measure due to their direct effect on the substrate removal efficiency. An economic evaluation showed that an SBR has an advantage over a wide range of biological wastewater treatment systems.

This is a new survey on the ways, paper mills are treating their effluent today in economical compatible and ecological sustainable way. Methods meeting best available technique and representing state of the art are shown and the special requirements of papermills using them are described. The book will be good help for everybody dealing with environmental protection in paper industry, especially dealing with water and wastewater treatment. It will be helpful as well as everyday's source of information as for just having a look at what is possible and sustainable today. Regarding legal requirements focus is laid on regulations of the European Community. Therefore the Directive for Integrated Pollution and Prevention Control (IPPC), including best available technique reference paper, and the Water Framework Directive WFD are explained in detail. Modern treatment methods used in paper industry for effluent treatment, like anaerobic extended granular sludge bed reactors (EGSB), different types of aerobic film reactors (as for instance MBBR) and membrane bioreactors (MBR) are described and the specific design data for wastewater treatment in papermills are given.
